Went to Yellowstone last year, north of Jackson Hole, Wyoming, further up from where you are starting and on the way to Canada? Need at least a week in that place if you are like me, wildlife and geothermal activity and all that. Amazing place, I have never been one for pubs and clubs. Threads on tripadvisor indicating many do spend less time there. Probably drive through it in several hours depending.
Check times of the year though, some road are shut until quite late in the year. Info on the National Park web sites web sites. All hotels are are government run but the ones we had were very good. It gets booked up early though.

Lots of places in Colorado to go and see.
Time of year is important, as above, many roads are shut in the mountains.
I had some friends come out from the UK, and you can do some impressive distances even for day trips. We did 4 corners and back in a day, and Mount Rushmore and back in another.
I'd probably head down to 4 corners, then up through Utah for sightseeing, then head off to Mount Rushmore.
Telluride and some of the other mountain towns are also worth a look.
Depends how you want to play it, really; you can use Denver as a base of operations for day trips or two to three day excursions, or just as a starting point.

When are you thinking of going? do you want it to be outdoorsy? are you interested in staying in cities, or not to bothered? and how up for driving are you?
In six weeks you could do a massive roadtrip if that was your thing.
There are so many options that narrowing it down by answering the above questions would massively help.
You could do a huge loop if you wanted in 6 weeks (though this is very optimistic!), eg:
- Denver (+ local stuff, eg. Rocky Mountain NP, Ouray, Pikes Peak, etc...)
- Grand Teton NP
- Yellowstone NP
- Glacier NP
- Calgary
- Banff NP
- Jasper NP
- Vancouver
- Seattle
- Crater Lake NP
- San Francisco
- Yosemite NP
- Death Valley NP
- Las Vegas
- Zion NP
- Bryce Canyon NP
- Page (Antelope Canyon, the Wave, etc...)
- Monument Valley
- Moab (Canyonlands NP, Arches NP, etc...)
- Denver
Give us more clues
I enjoy all this stuff and am currently planning a coast to coast trip.

2011 we slept for two months in a Toyota Hiace in New Zealand(9,800klms) in spring time so i would say outdoors is our thing,we are middle aged so not as fit as some younguns.
One night in a city is about enough for us.
Small towns,camping B&B etc.
We will be there for July and part August so it seems the weather will be good.
A bit of fishing is good. I will buy a rod when i get there.
I like to travel very light so that we can dump a rental car and jump on a train if it suits us.
Canada is on the agenda.
Driving is our bag.

The US has some amazing national parks, so maybe plan a trip based around them? Yellowstone and Glacier sound like they'd be must see places for you.
Places like Death Valley would be crazy hot at that time though.
