Looking for some advice please!

A Cuban/US colleague of mine is visiting London later this month and is combining his stay with a weekend in town with his new fiancee (who has never visited London before). He is looking for a hotel that is a bit special, either in terms of style, or more importantly (to impress her and give her a sense of London)location. His budget is £150~ish per night, but he could stretch a little higher if needed.

My first thought was the Tower Guoman, a chain hotel, but in a great position.

Does PH have any other similar suggestions?

Grange St Paul's can sometimes be had for that budget - cathedral is literally on the doorstep and Tate Modern etc... is just over the millennium bridge.

The Novotel at Euston hs just been re-fitted and is now under Accor's Pullmann brand (called the Pullmann St Pancras). The Superior rooms are very spacious and nicely appointed.

Good for British Museum, British Library and the West End is just a hop away.

Anything from the Firmdale Hotels group (Soho Hotel, Covent Garden Hotel etc), anything on Park Lane, The Sanderson Hotel on Berners St, Sanctum Soho Hotel on Warwick St.

Depends on what type of London they want to experience.

If they want the old fashioned tea rooms, close to posh shops then you could try Brown's Hotel in Albemarle Street. Right next to Bond Street and the RA.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, please keep them coming - he's hoping for something that gives the 'she knows she's in London when she opens the curtains' type of experience.

I had of course thought of the Cromwell, but I'd imagine that's just a touch on the pricey side and probably too well appointed for a couple of discerning visitors from across the pond hehe

The problem's the budget. Premier Inn is charging over £150 in central London these days.

In fact, how about the Premier Inn at County Hall; it'll be bigger than a US hotel on the inside, nice big comfy bed, not exactly luxury but nice enough, and it's smack in the heart of London sights.

Please don't send the chap to the Tower Guoman. He'll never speak to you again. It's long overdue for a refit, walls are very thin, noise travels through them very easily.

I regularly travel to London for work, and although I have a £300/night budget I usually stay in the Premier Inn on Prescott St, nr. Tower Bridge., and pay +/-£160 during the week. It's cheaper at the weekends.

I stayed here last week http://www.hazlittshotel.com/ something a little different and much more personal than a chain hotel. Perfect location too it cost me £170 for the night.

I've stayed in London twice recently and both hotels were very nice. The Cumberland near marble arch and Oxford street is 4 star and very modern/stylish. BT paid for it but I think it's in budget.

The other was Lancaster gate next to Hyde park. Less impressive but nice enough and good location. Not sure on price as the company paid but can't see it being over budget. Then again it is London. I did have a black tie gig at the Dorchester but if you have to ask the price of a room there, you can't afford it!

Seems more like staying in a well heeled residence rather than a hotel, even down to the honesty bar (help yourself and let them know in the morning) in the rear lounge/library

I have stayed at the Hampshire on Leicester Sq a few times with the Mrs and should be around budget.

the rooms have always been great and the location is quite central. I always enjoy getting a taxi to the hotel as it has to cross the pedestrian area and drive through the sea of tourists.
