Rome and Venice in April - any advice?

Ignore the title... change of plan already!
We are planning to visit Rome early April and would like to combine it with Florence Say 4 days in each...
Anyone got any advice on say how to travel between the two places? Also which districts to stay in each city?
Any other advice gratefully received.
Date we are looking at are 3rd to the 13th April
