Im at work at the moment with no access to my details but good advice I was given was to stay as close as you can to St Marks Square, makes a great central point and its easy to find, the narrow streets are such a warren of twists and turns, dead ends at a canal etc.
We stayed for Valentine's a couple of years ago and the street the hotel was in, was so narrow you could clash windows with the building opposite if both were open at the same time, we just wandered, with regular stops for a coffee, every street seems to lead back eventually to St Marks.
Beautiful place, we will return, and if you land at Marco Polo Airport, you can take the Water Taxi ( speedboat Vaporetti ) connection to the St Marks Square landing stage, makes for a James Bond welcome arrival feeling. off the plane into a speedboat, docking amongst the gondolas..... MMMMMM

We stayed in a hotel called the Palace Bonvechiati (may not be spelt exactly right!) when we went a few years ago. It was awesome, location, staff, room, everything was just fantastic! It is litterally 1 minute's walk from St Mark's square!

No idea about price, but if it is in budget, stay there!

We stayed at:
La Fenice et des Artistes, VENICE, 1936 SAN MARCO
It was fine, the room was big and old, which we liked, and it's not too far from the main square.
Top tips:
Don't take more than you can carry, and a rucksack is a hell of a lot easier than a rolly bag. We managed with hand luggage for 3 nights, no problem.
It sometimes gets a bit wet, depending on the tides, wellies would have been handy for a couple of hours, twice a day, but some parts are high enough to not need them.
