Myself and the GF travelling to New York (JFK) later in the year and am just having a nose at what all the options are with regards to getting from and to the airport, could anyone provide some advice or experiences on the best way to get from the airport to the hotel and back?

Seems the options are;

Airtrain/Subway
Taxi
or a shared shuttlebus

Would like to keep costs sensible, the hotel is The Jewel if that makes any difference?

Shuttlebus is probably best.

Taxi drivers in NYC live up to their stereotype (never actually BEEN to NYC before they pick you up from the airport) in my experience.

Get a taxi - Simple, fixed cost from JFK (plus bridge tolls) and tip. Never had any problem

I used the Airtrain out to Jamaica Station in Queens and then the Long Island Railroad in to Penn Station when I went in June, but then I was staying in the New Yorker which is just across the road from Penn Station.
Looking at where your hotel is, you could do the same and then get on the subway.

Don't assume your taxi driver knows where your hotel is smile.
