Got quotes for 4 nights in Bangkok (Rembrandt Hotel), and 13 nights in Phuket (Indigo Pearl), including private transfers in October. Quoted price £3877.
That's flying Glasgow to Dubai, and Dubai to Bangkok. And obviously internal flight to Phuket.

Just had a very quick look online (travelrepublic) and I've managed to save £700 -£750.
However this means no private transfers.

Is it easy enough getting a taxi from Bangkok airport to the city?
Also, same for Phuket? Easy enough to get from airport to hotels?
How much roughly would these taxi journeys cost?

It'll be my wife, 18month old son and myself that will be travelling.

Thanks in advance.

As I'm currently sat in my hotel in Chang Mai waiting for a taxi to the airport to fly to Bangkok ill answer your questions as best as i can,

Me and the GF landed at Bangkok international, and needed to go to the other airport in Bangkok for internal domestic flights, there was a taxi rank outside the airport arrivals, with loads of taxi's waiting, we paid 500 Baht = £11 ish,

We flew from Phuket up to Chang Mai, same again taxi's waiting, when your in Baggage Collections, there are normally taxi desks where you can buy a ticket for 120 Baht = £2.60, you then give this to a taxi driver outside arrivals and off you go, that was cheaper than wandering outside and trying to get one at a good price. If you don't get a ticket you take your chance. Alot of hotels will pick you up from the airport/ferry for a small charge, just email them in advance and they will have their hotel minibus guy standing waiting for you at arrivals.

We came on holiday for 3 weeks, we fly home on Thursday, we booked all hotels/flights separately,
In total we booked 4 hotels, 3 internal flights, Jet airways was the cheapest getting to Bangkok booking through STA travel, all our hotels were booked through Booking.com or Travel republic, all internal flights were air asia as they were all cheapest.

Taxi's here now, laters when i get to Bangkok!!! Ciao

If you are quite happy to free style it, then go that route. You will save.
Taxis are easy to pick up.

With regard to BKK, a little tip for you.
When you arrive, you are best advised to do one of 2 things.
If you want a seemless transfer, in comfort, then go to the Airport Limosine Service desk in the baggage reclaim hall and book from there. Fixed price, dependant on where you are going.
You'll get a clean, tidy and modern car, with effective a/c and a driver who can who will have been given written instructions of your hotel. Somewhere around £25 I would think.

Alternatively, when you are through to landside and have cleared the arrivals area, make your way to the departure level and go outside to the drop off area.
Taxis will be in this area, looking for return fares to the city. This will be the cheaper option.

I guess the third way is to take the skyrail, but that's a faff after a long flight.

In Phuket, there will be umpteen taxis touting for your business.
You can take these after negotiating, you can book a Limo transfer as above, or you can organise your hotel to collect you (at a cost).
If you use a regular taxi, there is a chance that you will have to "stop off at the taxi office, to check something". This is where the driver jumps out of the cab and nips into his office and a collegue takes the opporunity to sell you excursions, for later in your stay. This bugs the hell out of me.
Taxi is cheapest, airport limo next, lastly the hotel transfer. It's all relative though and even the hotel service is pretty cheap. I usually choose that option as it's far less hassle and you'll probably get cold towels, water etc in the car. A nice start to your stay.

Some great info in these replies. Thanks for that.

Going to price everything as accurately as possible later today/tonight. If I'm saving £700-£750 then it's a no brainer really.
Will report back with prices.

Any tips for websites that I should check for flights/hotels etc?
Any other tips for Thailand? Things to do that I may overlook?

swap Phuket for Chaing mai, at least for a few days.

Hotel will also have it's own taxi service, charge about a tenner for a hiace people carrier to go to the airport from Southern Phuket.

If you do go to Chaing Mai I can recommend a great guide, she was cheap as chips and makes visiting the temples / villages much better.

(if you do go to Phuket any chance of taking a jacket back for me, needs replacing!)

I've been in Phuket for the best part of a week now.

We arrived from Bangkok after 11 days there on a Thai Orient Flight that cost us 75£ for two one way.

All we booked were our first 4 nights in Bangkok and a one way ticket from home...we had no idea what we wanted to do as we are here for 3 months.

I booked the hotel for our first week in phuket the day we left Bangkok....some great last minute deals on Agoda etc. We just got "limousine" taxis from the airport.

To be honest, the super mental season seems to have ended so I'd just wing it if I were you.

I think we will visit Chaing Mai during our holiday, but stay in Phuket.

If you can give clear details of the shop and its location then I can't see a problem mate.
