Changing face of the Maldives

I feel that this development misses the whole idea of what makes a great Maldivian holiday. From my point of view, I want a small island with a few rooms, requiring a seaplane flight. This is none of that! This looks like mass tourism for the Maldives
As for the Greenstar becoming the no1 resort for conventions about Climate Change - I'm sure all the politicians can't wait to attend

Agreed. Spent my honeymoon in the Maldives on a tiny island and didn't wear shoes or socks for 2 weeks. Had cause to go to a bigger island to get treated for an ear infection (having the inside of your ears scraped ranks fairly high on the pain index!) and there were paved roads, trucks and swarms of fat sweaty americans on bikes. It was dreadful and I couldn't wait to get back to my little bit of paradise.
For me it completely misses the idea, however I can see why the government would partner a business to do this. They're basically selling bits of sea to the developers so they can anchor floating 'luxury' accommodation there. Lots of rich people will buy them and rent them out to other rich people.
The 3 resorts I've been to there were exactly how I'd like it to stay, no shoes, walk in scuba diving/snorkelling, house reefs, laid back, sunset dinners in the sand, none of it feeling plastic, manufactured etc.
At least they're not building multi storey hotels on the islands en masse which is what I feared before I clicked the link.

CB: multi storey building would sink the islands, wouldn't they?
Spent our honeymoon in 1999 on Lohifushi. It was OK but the hotel was in need of a refurb then.
We didn't see our beach villan neighbours at all in 2 weeks.
I just searched for the island again and found that it's changed it's name and has been refurbished!

Same here for our resort (in 2004) - it was slightly damaged by the tsunami and they took the opportunity to remodel and add 10s of water villas (there were 14 before).http://www.hudhuranfushiresort.com/
