Dubrovnik with a 6 year old

I've always fancied visiting Dubrovnik, and am contemplating booking a week in the old city at the end of August. We'll be taking our 6 year old son with us, and wanted to know if it would be ok as a family holiday destination?
I'm certainly not seeking theme parks, but safe sandy beaches would be important - anyone here been there with kids?

Jees, I was wondering who Dubrovnik was, thought it might be the next Savile celeb.

Its hot. Bloody hot. High 30s.

Be very aware of that. The coastline is stunning, but its not so much sandy beach territory. Lots of boat excursions, lovely sea to swim in.
