Miami Airport Car Hire Centre - any tips?

Flying into Miami in a few weeks and picking up a car from Avis - heard a few rumours that the car hire centre is a bit mental and hard work - anyone know if this is true and any tips to make it easier?

Stay the night at the airport hotel and collect your car next morning.

No problems, it is just off airport, away from the terminals - that's all.

You take a sky walk conveyor to a monorail thingy, that takes you directly into the main hall which has ALL the rental companies desks.

This is in turn connected to a large multi storey with all the cars. If you are arriving on a full international flight it will be busier than normal, as everyone needs a car in USA.
You can either rush like an idiot to get there first, or take your time, through immigration, get bags and meander to the rental area, whilst watching others get heated and frustrated with the wait. It is the volume of people that's the issue.
