A couple weeks ago my outbound flight UA9 LHR-EWR was delayed by approx. 2hrs due to bad weather/snow.
By the time I got to EWR, my connecting flight to SJO (UA1082) was already gone. It was the last one for the day, so had to stay in EWR overnight, get a hotel, pay for food/drinks etc.

When I landed in EWR I was given tickets for a next day flight to SJO, but was told that they (United) wouldn't provide food/accomodation as the LHR-EWR flight was delayed by less than 4hrs.
Given I booked all the flights as one trip from United.com, by my reckoning I suffered a 15hr delay on my outbound journey, from origin LHR to final destination SJO.

Have I got any grounds to ask for some compensation?

Ignore me I missed the one trip bit...

Yes you should be able to claim compensation as I tried to and when FinnAir realised how much it would cost them they got me business class from helsinki to london instead of waiting a day.

I was on Tampere - helsinki - london booked in one go.

Tampere flight was late and so missed the helsinki london flight.

I explained I was self employed and told them they would be paying my daily rate as a minimum claim as I would not get paid if I didnt show up if I was not on the next star alliance flight out, so if it meant them finding me a seat in business class at no extra cost I would take it.

They weighed up the costs of that and the overnight stay and decided to fly me.

I would also check terms and conditions just in case though...

Compensation is payable only when the dealy was the airlines fault, you can't blame them for bad weather.

No, but I can blame Heathrow airport for being inadequately prepared and not having their deicing equipment ready on time!

You can blame them (although theres a whole other thread about that) but you can't get compensation out of them. smile

I think its more likely that they identified you as an insufferable asshat and wanted you out the country as soon as possible rather than quivering in fear at your legal challenge.

Yes, their maximum legal liability on a flight like that would have been £200.

Was going to use my travel insurance and their compensation, plus me being a royal PITA got me on the flight...

I was in no mood to entertain them as I had looked up the weather forecast 2 days prior, rang them to ask if I could just do the Helsinki to London bit as the weather was supposed to be particularly bad for a turbo prop airport hopping in the wilderness... Got told yes I could just do the Helsinki to London part for the grand total of £200 in charges so I decided not to miss out the tampere to Helsinki section as it was double the ticket price.

Their fault, they had to solve it.

Last time they screwed up going the other way it cost them £300 in taxis, Im assuming they got a cheap rate on a local person and didnt pay full price.

It's more a case of them giving you good service. They only have to do what the law says that they have to do and that's between £200 and £480 in compensation depending on the length of the flight.

Being a PITA can work but equally it can make people think screw you, we'll do the minimum we can get away with.

I must admit that I thought if you were on a through ticket and were delayed in transit then they had to take care of you.

Did you only just miss the connection? I've been on delayed flights a couple of times (in not a huge number of trips) and they've held the next flight - once an internal flight within the US and second time was the transatlantic flight from the US (although they almost ran us through Atlanta airport only for one couple to go missing!). I assumed there were a fair number of people transferring and they'd weighed up how much it was going to cost them to put them up.

My understanding was that most companies advise on minimum transfer time, ignore the advice it's not their fault. Bit naughty though if they've ignored the minimum transfer time on booking...

I wondered how tight it was, hence I asked if he only just missed it. However I've asked about this before and been told if the system will let you book it, then it's OK.

Check out this page - you were on a flight out of an EU airport so covered by the latest EU flight delay compensation rules...

"If the initial disruption causes you to arrive at your final destination over three hours late, depending on what caused the disruption, you can claim compensation from your airline.

What matters is when you arrive at the final destination on your ticket. So if you book a London to Las Vegas flight via New York, where both legs are on the same ticket, what counts is when you get to Las Vegas.

But if you book your connecting flight separately from your original flight, meaning it's on another ticket, then you can only claim based on the delay to each individual flight

So using the same example, if you book London to New York separately from New York to Las Vegas, and the London to New York journey is delayed by less than three hours, causing you to miss the Las Vegas flight, then you can't claim compensation."

Though you may fall fowl of...

"Bad weather, industrial action and safety or security issues don't count. Examples of where the airline is at fault could include the crew being late, the pilot being sick with no standby pilot available, flight cleaners taking too long, or an airline cancelling a flight for its own reasons (say, if it didn't sell enough seats)."

I thought it had recently been determined that it didn't matter what the reason was - from the same site as your link: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/news/travel/2013/...
