Hello folks

We're planning a US West Coast trip for next year. We'll be after a rental car for 10 days and fancy something which would be fun to drive. I've looked at all the normal sites [Alamo etc] but ending up with a Sebring convertible ain't attractive. We'll have too much luggage for a convertible anyway but need to make the driving entertaining. Any suggestions/experiences?

Thanks for your time

TLG

Hertz premium...

Camaro SS, Challenger RT, Mustang GT/GT convertible. Specify exactly what you want and that is what you'll get. And don't believe the crap about the traction control buttons being disabled on the Camaros. You just have to know how to turn it off.

Where are you planning on travelling to if you don't mind me asking? You should definitely visit the Grand Canyon if you have a chance.

Nice! Make sure you hit up Hoover Damn while there too. I've never been to the red wood forest but it seems you may be nearby if you haven't considered it. Seems like you will be having some fun!

Yes, I think it might be SUV time as I don't think I can get all my [and the missus's] luggage in a convertible...... Still a Jeep'll be OK...

I've been told that Dollar do guaranteed Mustangs out of SF - well, thats what I have been assured by DialAFlight who I booked my road trip through (September this year).

Having had a look on their website, it does say 'Or Similar' but also there is a list of the cars they use for their fleet, and the only convertible on there is the Mustang smile

I do hope it works out for you but we did the same thing last year going into Boston. Mustang "or similar". When we got there, no Mustangs just a Sebring. No way, so after a "discussion" they gave me a Challenger [which isn't even on the list of cars]. Big car, but still fun. That said, when we reurned the Dodge 10 days later there were four f*!@#ing Mustangs on the lot!!!

The Mustangs that Dollar have will inevitably be V6's anyway, even if you do get your hands on one.

I've used Dollar every time I've rented in the US because of the ability to get the right deal if you know what you're doing until the last trip where I knew I was staying for an extended period and wanted something a bit more special and knew I'd get a better rate for renting on a monthly rate.

V8 loveliness...

Thanks for the link. We're off to SF August 2014 so this would be a jolly ride....

Is that all in the 10 days?

It's also worth noting that you can't get the fun cars on one way rentals (unless you are very lucky!), though looking at that list it shouldn't affect you.

Do be aware that in national parks you'll probably want something that you aren't scared to take down non-paved tracks/roads!
