Staying in Alcudia with the Girlfriend for 5 nights from August 3rd, only thing i've planned so far is to go Check out the old town and market, walk along the walls etc. Anyone else been and know of any good places to check out or handy tips?

I quite like to do things as well as sitting on the beach in the sun. Hotel is a 30 second walk to the Beach/bay and marina there so that's handy!

Cheers!

Palma Cathedral is lovely and there are generally some cracking boats parked up in the Marina.

I hope you realise that Alcudia in August will be totally bombed with all sorts and their kids, etc.

Some years ago wife and I went to Pollensa and decided to visit Alcudia...we were there for maybe 30 minutes, and headed back for peace and quiet and able to find a good spot on the beach!

We stayed in Porto pollensa a few years back, which is a short drive along the coast from alcudia. We went to the beach there one day and it wasn't particularly busy, that would of been in August. If I remember correctly the beach has a really gentle gradient out to see.

Worth a trip to the old town of pollensa in the evening too, there's often live music there.

Palma is the other side of the island, but it's really easy to get to, just hire something with more power than the fiat panda we had!

Alcudia is very popular with Germans and Puerto Pollensa is generally full of Brits. The beach in Pollensa is lovely and is probably a 15 minute drive from Alcudia.

Sorry to break it to you, but (aside from the old, walled town) Alcudia is a tattooed Chav infested, all day breakfast sthole.

The best thing that you can see there is the road to Puerto Pollensa and Pollensa old town (around 10k round the bay). If you want a small, quiet beach with excellent snorkelling, go round to Cala St Vincenc (just past PUerto Pollensa). If you want a big, not so crowded beach, head for Llenaire between Puerto Pollensa and Alcudia. If you want a pleasant evening out with nice restaurants and square bustling with locals and tourists alike, go to Pollensa (inland).

Some of our friends rented a villa there last year against our advice. On the first night they looked out of their window to see what they thought at first glance was a beautiful moon-rise. On closer inspection, it turned out to be a 30' diameter Burger King sign. We went to visit them one evening and within 30 seconds of walking out of their front door, we encountered a fat, sunburned English oik being sick on booze. It went downhill from there as we walked past bars ofull of stfaced English blokes watching football in the myriad of mucky bars, swilling down cheap, watered down lager while their sunburned girlfriends were screaming at their appallingly behaved kids.

Honestly, the first thing I would do is go the hire car place and get yourself a car. Alcudia is truly grim.

We've been going to Pollensa 2 or 3 times a year for the past 15 years and are currently toying with the idea of buying a villa in the La Font district, so know the area pretty well.

In short, breakfast at the hotel, jump into the hire car and drive for no more than 15 minutes to have a very pleasant holiday

I know that makes me sound really pompous, but honestly Alcudia is absolutely fking terrible (apart from the walled town which is actually quite nice due to being a fair way from The Strip

I went to Alcudia about 20 years ago, hated it and was so glad the weather was horrendous and forced an early flight back.

Doesn't sound like the place has changed much, fights spilling out of the sports bars and chairs and sun parasols thrown into the canals after the football finished. Then when it was raining the restraints flooded.

Oh F***ing great. I'm going to be well in the s**t for booking this!

All the reviews and photos looked great.

It's port d'alcudia as apose to the bit on the other side if that makes any diffrence? I doubt it knwoing my luck.

There's a hire car company in the town that will Hire me a Mustnag for the week though so that's not so bad? Silver linings!

If you're hiring a car take the drive down to Sa Calobra, stunning scenery.

Just get a hire car and position it to your GF as a "base". Everything is pretty close by, so you won't have to drive far to get to some nice areas. As I mentioned previously, I thoroughly recommend an evening in Pollenca Old Town and also a trip to Cala St Vincenz.

If you like wandering round markets and have a car, go to Siler on a Wednesday or Pollensa on a Sunday morning (get there early - about 0800). A day trip to Soller or Valdemossa in the North West of the island is a very pleasant way of spending a few hours. This can be combined with a trip back along the twisting mountain roads and a stop off at one of the secluded cloves on the North coast, such as Sa Colobra, Cala Tuent which are absolutely stunning (Sa Colobra can get a little busy).

If you stay in Alcudia itself, Mallorca will fulfil all the stereotypes it's earned for itself over the years. Invest a little time to see the island properly and you will quickly realise it a stunning, diverse place.

Well I always wanted to get out and explore the area, even when I thought i'd booked a nice place, so that's not a problem. I've already booked a Transfer from the airport for us but getting a car in the town works out about £30-40 cheaper than getting it at the Airport so that works out well too.

Thanks for the advice!

Don't despair. You might not be right in the middle of the strip and the old town is beautiful

Below is where the hotel is, Car park oposite is free and from reading belongs to the Hotel. When I looked on street veiw there's a lot of bulding work on the go, they refurbished all the double rooms and that work is now comepleted.

Like you said treat it as a base and get about a bit and it will be fine.

god my typing is awful today.

At least your near the port, not in the middle of the strip, should be OK... Dont despair.
