Hi, can anyone offer any advise on routes or hotels or anything generally that would help our trip through france in early june, we are planning on getting the ferry to santander or bilbao and then driving through or around the pyrenees down to the med coast along the coast to monaco for a few days then driving up towards the alps / swiss border back up through france to calais, never done anything like this before so any advise more than welcome thanks .......
Collioure is very pleasant. We stayed here http://www.relaisdestroismas.com/ for a few nights. Good restaurant or an easy stroll into town on the coast path.

Go to St Jean Da Luz. Stay @Lorreamar Thallasso Spa, right on the beach, & whatever it takes with your route cross Milau Bridge.
If I were doing this trip I'd be going to Caen or Cherbourg by ferry & spending some time on I'l de Rey.
Did both the above 2009.

Don't forget ya Toll Tag...Make that your Priority...
I did a very similar trip in 2010 and it takes a lot of planning. Ferry to Bilbao, over the Pyrenees, across to Mt Ventoux and Millau, down the Route Napoleon to Monaco (stayed in Menton), then into Italy to Brescia and Maranello, then up to Stelvio and Switzerland, followed by the main Swiss passes and back via the Mullhouse museum and Reims. I'd recommend it all!
You should be able to do much of it yourself from previous threads on here - there are loads.
Personally the ferry was boring but not a bad way to start the trip - you can get some sleep and cut out a lot of miles. The Pyrenees are great, and I'd certainly suggest you do Mt Ventoux. Stay in Menton rather than Monaco (easy to get there). Do all the Swiss passes that you can but beware the police!

It's linked to ya Bank Account...There are Toll roads everywhere, you dump the Tag on the top of Dashboard and the Barriers open automatically before you even reach the Barrier so in other words you can approach Barriers at say 20mph and just go straight thru...
The Tag debits your Bank Account so it can be used in any Car at any time...
You don't want to be queuing up and paying in Foreign monies all the time...especially if ya driving a right hand drive as all machines are on left...

I'm not sure how easy the pass is to get hold of if you're not a French resident (I think you'll need to sign up for a monthly cost - see below). I would suggest using your credit or debit card at the pèage tolls. In my experience, the credit card queues are the shortest and it's really easy - card in, card out.Tag infö here:

I've done coast to coast in France about 20 times - maybe more. Huge fun - I'm doing it this year at the end of July.
