Hate flying, £2000 to drive somwhere nice in europe?

Hello all,

Call me what you will, but i hate flying, not getting on a plane end of. So our holiday this year will involve driving to our destination.

Have a convertible so would like to enjoy the drive somewhere but don't think the mrs would approve of the WHOLE holiday being the drive.

Looking to spend around a week to ten days away with some sightseeing and wouldnt mind a beach as well.

A tall order?

Northern Italy, not done it myself but a friend did and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Where are you starting from, if it takes 10 hours to get the tunnel then that changes things

Cornwall, pleasant, beaches, & they even have a similar language to us .

Merseyside going by his profile so there's a few hours getting to the south coast.

I'd also go to Italy but it's a long slog.

How about Le Mans ?...I hear it's quite good in June.....

Montenegro is beautiful for convertibles as scenery is great and summer weather is 90% sunny. You can go visit Italy(beautiful mountain roads there too) and then take a ferry from Ancona or Bari to Montenegro, then go back home through Croatia Slovenia etc. you have two options highway if you get bored of driving but I'd recommend coastal road that takes you through croatian cities.

Ferry to Santander, drive the length of the Pyrenees, hopping backwards and forward between France and Spain, take 2 or 3 days staying in Auberges along the way, then get a beachside villa for a week somewhere about Collioure on the Mediteranean coast. Back to Santander by a similar but different route.

I've done this a few times now in cars, bike and (hand in my PH membership now) also by foot and public transport. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes to travel under their own steam.

Thanks for responses so far.

As stated above im travelling from merseyside, drove to paris in feb and the journey home was a disaster with the train being delayed several hours!

The plan was to drive to lake como via germany & switzerland but have insufficient funds for the journey, so will do that next year.

will have a look whats going on in the above mentioned places!

Oddly enough, I had this conversation with a friend last week. We're both dyed-in-the-wool petrol heads, but neither of us particularly fancy a driving holiday like this. I can't imagine it being particularly relaxing, as much as I love driving.

it also depends where and what you drive, it's also important not to overdo it...3-4 hours of driving a day on average is ideal I think

Everyone heads south.

Give some thought to heading north for 10 days.

Drive to Newcastle. Take the overnight ferry to Norway. Drive around the mountains. Head south through Sweden, Denmark, Germany and Holland. Ferry back to Newcastle.
