I don't know if they are good/bad/indifferent as I never had to pay/use a tour company to get there!

Yeah I think someone on here is friends with the owner of Lupine. They seem a good outfit.http://www.lupinetravel.co.uk/chernobyl-holidays-a...

I had planned to book Chernobyl this year but a bit of a crisis at work has frozen any holiday bookings.
Chernobyl and North Korea are on my 'dark' travel list right now, with Japan in my main list, hopefully in October / November!

Hi everyone! My name is Irina and I'm from UA.
I've visited Chernobyl 1 year ago with 4 of my friends, and we had a great guide ( we booked tour on http://tour2chernobyl.com/ ).
It's safe to visit, the radiation level is not too high, we actually got pretty close to sarcophagus ( 160 meters! )/
So 1 year passed since that trip and 'm still alive and not losing my hair
We've made planty of photos, here's one of them:

I'd very much like to see these pictures, are they hosted anywhere?

We did a 3-day private tour with these guys in April last year and it was fantastic.https://chernobyl-tour.com/english/

Accomodation and food is VERY basic during your stay - You stay in a 'Hotel' in Chernobyl town and eat in the canteen for the local workers. The food is usually three or four 'courses' of basic food such as a thin cabbage broth with pork meatballs, cabbage perogi-style dumplings, boiled potatoes and fruit. (Cabbage featured highly on the menu!)
We got to explore around the power plant and had many hours in Pripyat. Visited Duga, several abandoned villaged, and a grandma who moved back 5 years after the accident and has been there every since. She plied us with home-made vodka, potatoes, cakes, eggs and fatty pork, all of which was grown in her garden and made with water from her well. She lived about 15km from the power plant.

Is Kiev generally safe enough to stay in and walk around the main areas now?
Was it unsafe? We were there last April during the height of the Russia/Ukraine 'issues' and never has any problems at all walking around the city. The trouble was much farther South from Kiev.

I'm not sure, I thought I'd read it on the Gov.uk travel advice about potential protests getting out of hand etc.We were there last April during the height of the Russia/Ukraine 'issues' and never has any problems at all walking around the city. The trouble was much farther South from Kiev.
