York to Devon over the NY weekend - thoughts please

The reason Im asking is that we're planning a road trip from York to Devon at some point before/during the New Year weekend and have a little bit of flexibility as Ive booked the Friday as leave. This is not a journey I often do.

On the one hand the day immediately before a bank holiday weekend is usually a completely stupid time to take in a roadtrip involving most of the M5 but on the other I have a feeling it may not be as terrible as I think as some/many people having soft days at work and spreading their festive cheer and travelling over the week as a whole.

So for the least stress would you suggest I leave on Friday after breakfast with possible crowds or wait till 6AM Saturday morning?

Personally I would go the Friday, people will be travelling heading home but won’t be NY revellers in the main so will likely not be rushing etc...
