My colleague, who is a counterpart at the same seniority as me but with different responsibilities, has done something completely bizarre.

We had a sudden biz trip. Find out about it and leave the same day deal. Before I had a chance to book my hotel, my colleague announced to me that he got a 2br for the both of us of AirBnB or somewhere. So I'm in it now and as expected it is just somebody's own apartment which they rent out when they are away. We are both on expenses, so it's not like we need to get something cheap of AirBnB.

I'm in the lounge room typing this while my colleague is in bed already, although I can hear faint sounds of him burping and coughing.

I really wish I was in a soulless chain hotel, like where I usually stay when on biz trips.

Is this situation just weird, or am I being a princess?

Weird for me. I travel for work a lot and would be horrified to have to share with someone.

No, it's weird. When I'm away I work with people for 12 hours a day, I don't want to be with them 24/7. I refuse to share rooms now & I don't care if I come over as difficult.

Depends, init? Some AirBnB apartments are smart, clean places at about 1/10 the cost of an equivalent aparthotel. Others are terrifying temples to the bizarre tastes of their owners who are probably still hiding somewhere in the apartment waiting for an opportunity to sniff your pants. Sleep well.

If it had a double room and en suite, and as a bonus a living room and a kitchen then I wouldn't mind.

But I agree, spending all day with a colleague I the office or travelling is enough, or pay me for the evening, night and morning.

Take back control. Your expenses, your terms.

You already know deep down that it's his attempt at being close to you - expect a 2am knock on the door saying he can't sleep. Time to face up to the reality - it's him, or Lenny.

Sleep well.

^ Should I just go in there and ask if he wants gay love? I'd either be able to try something new, or if not then I probably won't get invited into this strange situation again?

He's asleep?
Now is your opportunity to ensure that this nightmare is never visited upon you again!

I think still awake as I can hear occasional burping.

Use a large pillow as a 'silencer'.

I admire your approach. I'd personally double-down and not ask- just get in there with a preemptive strike. That way you can dictate the timings and assure yourself of some quality sleep time.

I would rather be in a cheap soulless chain hotel than someone's apartment.

As long as it's clean, has decent Wifi, and a few satellite news channels, I would be happy.

I don't know about being a princess but if you're lucky/unlucky (delete as appropriate) you might end up being a bh.

Some years ago a colleague and I had to go on a training course in Dublin. The office manager, coming up blank on availability, in desperation asked if we'd mind sharing a room. Colleague and I looked at each other out of the corner of our eyes and I just got in first and politely refused. Eventually she found a small B&B with available rooms; mine was what the owner cheerfully referred to as 'the Honeymoon Suite'. It had a four poster bed and everything - carpet, walls, bedding - was pink. My colleague took a look, burst out laughing and said "I'm so effing glad you insisted on separate rooms".

Depends how long I'm away for. If it's just a few nights then a hotel is fine, but for longer stays I'd much rather have an AirBnB apartment where I can make my own food and have a bit more space than a hotel room. Eating out ever night get dull after a while.

I'm checking out of the AirBnB I've had for the last month tomorrow, but am away again the weeks before and after Easter, when all the AirBnB's in the area are full of tourists so I will have to stay in a hotel instead. The one bed apartment with a lounge, kitchen and bathroom for a month worked out about the same rate as a 4 night stay in basic local hotel.

No never, although once I did wake up with 15 colleagues in my hotel bedroom after a sales conference in Munich.

Is that in the UK? I’ve looked at AirBnB a couple of times but never seen much price advantage and certainly nothing on that scale.
