Folks,

My better half is treating me to a couple of nights in Docklands in July. Arrive Sunday. Leave Tues lunchtime.

The train is looking like £150 return for the pair of us from Taunton. Can anyone suggest a sensible point to park and train in or should I stop moaning and pay the train fare? We’ll obviously come in from M4...

Drive up the A303, park at Micheldever?

Still 90 mins train, but very relaxed option, and you skip London and M25 driving.

I'll often park on Thames Road in Chiswick, just of J1 of the M4. You could easily get an Uber to Clapham Junction and then docklands isn't hard.

Easy if you're just pulling carry on cases.

Docklands isn't really Central London, it's zone 2.

Depending on exactly where in Docklands, you could consider driving all of the way and parking locally. You could probably cover the parking for the combined cost of station parking + train fare from outside of London. Driving there on a Sunday would be pretty easy. Leaving on the Tuesday would be variable, but leave before 4:30 or after 7:00pm and you should be ok. Park at the O2, and you remove the Blackwall tunnel from the equation. It's only one stop from there to Canary Wharf.

Coming from the West and trying to get there by train / tube will be a bit tedious.

Dock lands, your looking at 2/3/4 underground changes on public transport from Paddington, your two hour journey just got doubled.

Id just drive in, it’s the weekend, loads of parking, when your there your there.

Can you not stay somewhere west, we live in kent and I’d not be happy with the wife if she booked somewhere too off piste to get around.

Cheers folks. Ordinarily central London I’d just get the train, nice and relaxing but as said it’s a faff on various tubes etc to get there!

Driving straight to Docklands doesn’t sound crazy.

Berry’s Superfast coach service to Hammersmith and tube it?

Nonstop from Bridgwater and with onboard food and drinks service it really isn’t bad.

Many many years ago, if going up for just the day from the West Country to central London, I'd park at West Hounslow tube station. If working at Docklands, however, I' go around the M25 to the A2 (or A20 ?)

You are being 'treated' to a trip away, and being left to sort out the travel whistle

It depends on your door to door journey, if you live far from Bristol station then you may as well drive in and pay for parking.

Train sounds expensive. Have a look at Grand Central, use it quite a bit & it saves a fortune.

Id have imagined all the obvious commuter stations are now in a residents zone, but I could be wrong.....

Hillingdon Station was always the default easy park coming from the West but again further research is advised as above.

The only thing I can say for sure is that Muswell Hill has lots of free on street parking but is a bus ride away from the Piccadilly Line which isnt really your best option - you need the Jubilee however see above for Stanmore

Cheers

I always use the car park at Westfield Shopping Centre. Not far from the M4, on the central line and only £8 a day.

I really wouldn't want to drive into London (I live in south London) and my train journey only takes about 15 mins. Apart from the long drive you would have from Taunton, the cost of fuel, parking charges and then perhaps being concerned about the safety of your car.. eeergh no.

My sister lives near Par and her husband sometimes has to come to London. He goes to Newquay and gets a Flybe flight to Gatwick, takes just over an hour! You'll be surprised how cheap it is compared to the train. I think they also go to London City apt too but may cost a little more.
My elderly mother did it a few months back, Gatwick to Newquay and it was actually slightly cheaper than the train. Have a look.

... of course noting how long it takes to drive to Newquay but I suspect less traffic..

https://parkonmydrive.com is always a good shout, you could find a space right where you are staying or a space a bit further out and get the tube in.

We are only 30 miles out of Central London but we've used them a few times, most recently the wife used them on Sunday to park up at Wembley.
