Where to visit between Stansted and Yorkshire
Discussion
Collecting the mother from Stansted airport on Sunday morning and am looking for a place to have a day trip between there and Yorkshire.
We did Cambridge last year which was really nice, but can't really see anywhere obvious.
How are places like Ely or Stamford? Is there anywhere that anyone can really recommend?

Not that Bletchley Park isn't a good place to visit, but it isn't 'on the way' from Yorkshire to Stansted. It involves using the M1 at a point where you should consider religion if you can average faster than 55mph, and then followed by picking your way tediously across country when all the roads want to do is head to the M25. Personally I'd rather not make that my journey.
Audley End house is near Saffron Walden. I've never been. BBMF museum is off somewhere east of Grantham I think? Might be a bit too off route though. Belton House is close to the A1 if that's your sort of thing?? Duxford isn't far north of Stansted either.

We went here last weekend - https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/calke-abbey
It was fascinating, to say the least. In the 1920's (?) death duties meant that the family living there couldn't afford to run the place. they simply shut up half the house. The National Trust took it over in the 1980's, and left these abandoned rooms in their time-warp state. It was like looking back in time!
The vast gardens are also incredible.
You'd easily fill a day there.

+1 for Duxford Imperial War Museum. It's amazing and there is much to see. It has themed hangars spread over the site, so quite a lot of walking involved. I think there may be a shuttle bus service operating on busy days. Check the website for details and also their flying programme / special events. The military vehicles hangar at the furthest end is well worth a look, lots of cleverly arranged dioramas add extra interest.
Also Burghley House & gardens and Stamford just off the A1 are well worth visiting.

A slight detour off the M11 will bring you to St Neots where, for just this bank holiday weekend, we have full action packed festival of inland waterways boats. Was there today and quite a good display of boats and stuff. Tomorrow, Sunday, we have the illuminated boat procession late afternoon. Should be worth the detour and it's all FREE. M11 to J13, then A428 to St Neots then when you're done, the A1 is half a mile away.
