The price of travel !
Discussion
I remember the bloke who bought a car to get from London to Bristol as it was cheaper than a train ticket or something. Instead he could've gotten a coach for a tenner instead.
I enjoy experimenting with rail fares when waiting on the platform. To get from my local station to Thurso and back costs £625 for a first class any time ticket. And there isn't even a first class for the last couple of hundred miles.

Not just me then! My aim is to tinker about to find the highest priced ticket. Record so far is 1st class from Dover to Aberdeen at a smidge over £1k!You can often save a fair amount of money by 'splitting' the journey (e.g. London to Newcastle, Newcastle to Edinburgh). You normally don't have to change or even get off the train. There's plenty of websites that'll work out the detail for you.

eta; a peak time ticket for tomorrow from Hastings to Edinburgh is £176. Splitting the ticket works out at £154 but involves an extra change. Cheapest flight to LA tomorrow is 'from' £415 according to Google.

I used to commute from just outside Edinburgh to Glasgow after I graduated from uni and was still living with parents. The commute along the express line I believe is Scotland’s most expensive train commute. Monthly ticket costs more than the mortgage on my flat!
Reading to Paddington season ticket - £4500 pa. Not including underground... For 25 mins each way.Just checked, EDI<> Glasgow, a mere £2400

Last train I used was Newcastle to Kings Cross, pauper class, Booked 2weeks before - £346 return
The most of ever paid for a train
I normally fly but the available flight times didn’t work sadly, but the price of trains in this country is laughable - they may as well be invented by Apple!

You shouldn't have to go through all that b
ks for a cheap fare. Had that b
ks once when I tried a split ticket once on a work commute Manchester to Birmingham, all it did was lose us the reserved seats on the sardine tin a 1/3rd of the way into the journey at Stoke.Another load of b
ks is buying a Macclesfield to Manchester rail ticket, you can only use 1 or 2 of the operators passing thru not all 3. A scam that catches many out, it's a foookin 30 minute straight rail trip it shouldn't be that difficult with half a dozen different fares.A few years ago i was staying on holiday in Stirling, and the team had a evening game at Hull. Tried every way to get to Hull by train and return. Not only was their service a pile of horses
t the fare was eyewatering.
Finally flew RyanAir ( yes i know) from Glasgow to Dublin, then Dublin to Gatwick. And a train/tube up to Uxbridge, where I was picked up by my lad and his mate. They dropped me off at Luton at silly o clock in the morning, got the Luton-Stanstead bus and first flight out to Edinburgh ,then Train back to Stirling
My total outlay was 6,00 for the flights 15.00 for the three trains and 3.00 for the Bus

Some logic would be nice in pricing.
I'm in the SW where it's nothing but Great Western or whatever it's called these days.
A walk up day return to St Ives from Tiverton Parkway is about £22. It's 150 miles or so and three and a bit hours each way.
Tiverton Parkway to Taunton, about 11 miles, is £11.
Now I'm sure that's the London factor, but the London factor should be added between Taunton and London, not the bad where locals might want to get about.
