After leaving Stockholm, I'll be taking the overnight arriving at Rostock at 0630hrs on a Saturday, so nice and early to hit the autobahn and make tracks.

At a good speed (cruising at 130mph or so on clear roads) how likely is it that I'll make progress until traffic builds? Am I likely to get to Berlin in low traffic conditions?

I have driven on the autobahn many times and have grown to be wary of the forceful nature of German fast car drivers and also, getting sucked into behaving in a similar manner! Therefore, I won't be trying to force progress in heavier traffic when it wouldn't be prudent to do so.

Google maps says Rostock to Munich is 487 miles and will take 7 hours ,also shows 4 roadworks sites.

Germany can do jams as lengthy as any other country.

I have done this but in 2 separate sections. The Rostock to Berlin section isn't unlimited for about half of it. 7 hours is being bloody optimistic not going to lie. First was in a 180bhp 1.5 EcoBoost Focus, the second was in a 180bhp diesel Mondeo. Traffic in Germany is getting heavier every year and averaging 100mph on the unlimited sections takes skill and top class concentration. I'd be adding another 3 hours to that to make it a comfortable drive. I stop once every hour or 90 mins at McDonald's or whatever for coffee etc, helps keep you fresh and sharp as there's a lot of people out there with more power but also people who are going a lot slower in the fast lane...

My car's sweet spot is 105mph at around 2750rpm, so they'll be my marker point.

I'm in absolute agreement regarding traffic jams, except I have hit a few that are a dead stop, which I only ever really experience in the UK on the M25.

I was wondering how much headway I would make if I just grabbed a bite and some water on the ferry and made the most of an early morning! Is there an online resource to assist me in identifying the derestricted autobahn sections from the restricted? I have previously driven Rostock to Berlin on a beautiful summer's evening and recall sitting at cruise at 140mph for ages without any traffic!

I think that you're being optimistic to expect to run at high speeds for a long period over that distance particularly if you're not used to driving here. Good luck and try not to be the statistic that runs into the back of stationary traffic! We just had one outside our city last week. 5 dead!

I have driven on the autobahn fairly regularly and don't intend to race. The suggestion that I do is unintentional. I simply wish to take advantage of the destriction, in order to cover ground and focus on the road, rather than be distracted by the threat of police!

I've done Rostock to Bitburg having taken the Helsinki ferry about 10 years ago. Leaving Rostock at 11pm meant the roads were empty. You've a couple of hours before the roads get busy.

I used a much quieter autobahn than the A1 a couple of weeks ago to/from Cologne, and whilst running at 100mph or so was fairly easy, (a) there weren't that many cars around, and (b) those cars that were around still pull out in front of you as they don't use their mirrors!

It's possible, but you will be on/off the gas/brakes for the entire run.

Those middle management Passat estates! To be fair, it is hard to judge how fast a vehicle is approaching at generous three figure speeds from quite a distance.

I'm assuming about two possibly three hours that I'll enjoy in swift light traffic conditions until I kick back and just enjoy a relaxing 90+ drive without getting baited (who am I kidding!).
