Staffs / Cheshire Family day out

Good evening,
We are driving from NW London to Windermere in mid Jul.
I want to break the journey, and stay overnight somewhere, and have the Sat afternoon and / or Sun morning to use before we carry on.
Will be me and 2 boys (10 and 8).
Is there anything that is good to visit / see? Nothing in particular but we like being outside, fun museums etc.
Any advice on either days out and / or hotels?

The Monkey Forest @ Trentham Gardens near Stoke
Chester Zoo and/or Chester itself for the Roman Walls, Amphitheatre etc
Liverpool and the waterfront especially is good. Could do the ferry across the Mersey etc
If weather is good, Hilbre Island/West Kirby beach on the Wirral
Hawkstone Park and Follies in Shropshire (not far off Cheshire/Staffs border) is very interesting
Aviation Viewing Park @ Manchester Airport (just off the Altrincham/Wilmslow road). There is a Concorde in the hangar and they do tours, plus a Nimrod and a Trident. Really close to the runway/taxi way too for the planes landing/taking off.

You will marvel at the simplicity of activities.
You will have cuts and bruises.
It is an absolute great place…I was 40 years old when i went, it was an absolute pisser.

Don't forget a change of clothes and a first aid kit though
Always baughted up to the eyeballs in mud and last time had to drive ages to the nearest redneck village for some first aid bits

We did Waterworld in Stoke a few weeks ago. The kids (and parents) had a great time. Loads of water slides, wave pool, lazy rivers etc. Cafes/restaurants all poolside too.
Mine are 4 and 5, bit too small for most of the bigger rides, but yours would be ideal age.

The Secret Nuclear Bunker at Nantwich is worth a visit, followed by a stop off at one of the ice cream farms nearby. If you're in the National Trust there are loads of places to visit, Styal Mill for instance. There's also the Lion Salt Works in Northwich, Jodrell Bank has been mentioned already and that is great.

Lyme Park for good views over the Manchester skyline and Cheshire etc too Acton scott farm in Shropshire https://www.actonscott.com/ , but cosford would be my choice, and free entry as well
