We’ll be off to Scotland for a week in Aug and I have a few days of hols left over. Could be anywhere between 3 days and a week. Trying to choose which of the scenic routes to do - suggestions and stopping places welcome! Likely to be me and teenaged son.

Or is it likely to be basically a slow crawl behind campervans at that time of year, which I could do on the M25?

Cheers all.

Have a look here for route ideas, there are plenty:

You'll be lucky to find much choice of accommodation so close to your departure time and yes, the roads are clogged.

The South West Coastal 300 is worth a shout, it's a lovely part of the world

Certainly won't be anywhere near as busy as the NC500.

Unless you're really unconfident on driving and navigating in the UK then you don't need a tourist board route. And yes, they will be busy.

Almost any road and route north of Stirling (any many south of it too) are amazing. It's pretty easy and quick to check out intersting routes using google maps.

So I'd suggest just picking out all the places you'd like to see or activites, etc and then just make up some routes between them. Plenty here will help join the dots if you can say what things you'd like to do/see.

I've stumbled across many good roads just by picking a random route - eg Archiestown -> Dallas -> Forres -> Ferness -> Carrbridge or the road past Fosinard. Both of these you rarely see another car, maybe just the odd grumpy local in their pickup.

For driving my favourite area is inside the triangle between Wick, Thurso and John O Groats. The roads are single land with passing places, long straights and some nice bends, but the best thing is the land is relatively flat and open, so you can often see the road ahead around corners, allowing 'enthusiastic' driving somewhat safely. Most other 'epic' roads (eg north west) are just too busy these days.

Just come back from a two week trip; did some NC500 and NE250.

Not that busy; still loads quieter than anything in Southern England. If you want to properly enjoy a drive 06:00-08:00 and after 19:30 will be your friend.
