I also find it fascinating, but I'd never visit. I'd be too paranoid about getting arrested for something extremely daft and be banged up for years!

I’ve been to Dandong which is at the border of North Korea; the two are separated by the Yalu River. Apparently for a fee you can enter North Korea, but in reality you are not, the real border in further inland. We visited the broken bridge (‘accidentally’ bombed by the American’s) which linked the two countries together.

Looking across the river, you can see feeble attempts to make the place look normal, but clearly that is just for show. There are few North Koreans in Dandong, but they are very reluctant to talk to foreigners despite being fluent in Putonghua.

What is very noticeable is the view at night time Dandong like most Chinese cities is ablaze of neon lighting, look across the river and its complete darkness not even a glimmer of light!
