Off to Glasgow for 3 days with the GF in a couple of weeks and we're thinking about heading out of the city for a day trip with a hire car. Would be good to get some walking in or see some points of interest. Does anyone have any tips or recommendations at all?

Loch Lomond would be a good call, perhaps park up in Balmaha and take a hike up Conic Hill for the views. Lunch or dinner at the Clachan Inn in Drymen maybe, Scotland's oldest pub, if you're interested in that sort of thing.

Have a look at The Whangie; Devil's Pulpit; Conic Hill and the Oak Tree Inn; the Crow Road over to Fintry and then back over the Tak Ma Doon road if you fancy a drive; Aberfoyle to Callander via Brig O'Turk is a nice drive but a bit further; ferry to Dunoon and then drive back round via Rest And Be Thankful. Walk up Ben Lomond if you're feeling fit.

Loch Lomond Shores near Balloch is okay but a bit sanitised, you'll have a more fulfilling day getting out into nature and finding a pub somewhere for lunch.

There's also a car park halfway up the Crow Road where you can walk up from and follow the stream up the hill, probably a few paths up that way too, and a cafe somewhere. A nice way to spend half a day.

Irvine or Troon beaches are fantastic in the right weather and you can get a good couple of hours walk in before lunch/dinner at several good restaurants nearby. I’d recommend Adesso Italian in Irvine. If you want to splash the cashe there’s a Michelin star place near dalry which is reasonable enough given the quality of the food.

Also maybe worth just going for a drive up the a82 to ballachulish and loop around via Oban. Views are simply stunning

I think the more pertinent question is perhaps how are you spending the other two days in Glasgow itself... smile

Thanks chaps, some good suggestions there. A bit of a yomp along the west highland way looks a good bet followed by a pub dinner somewhere!

We're arriving on a Friday evening so we'll most likely find a pub/bar and a takeaway for the first night. Saturday will be spent mooching around the old city, visiting galleries/museums etc followed by a gig and then a meal or meal and then gig dependent on the timings. Sunday will be a day out of the city and Monday will probably be much the same as Saturday before we fly backbeer

That sounds like a pretty good Glasgow weekend. smile If you go to Kelvingrove, go to Baffo opposite for lunch, it's the best pizza in Glasgow (yes that's right, Paesanos).

I'd second Conic hill if it's a clear day. Or Invverary is a fantastic wee town on Loch Fyne.

Or head down the Ayrshire coast to Culzean Castle.

Think it might be a bit late for recommendations.

I may be wrong but I was under the impression that Baffo had closed the doors. would also highly recommend Mother India (not MI Cafe, which is also very good) just along the road if you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, it is exceptional.

Perhaps I didn't read past the 2nd post. Ach well. Maybe someone else will find it useful.
