Howdy chaps,

I know, I know....this has probably been covered a million times hehe

Me and the missus are going away to Tenerife end of the month, and I'm trying to decide between renting a car or a maxi scooter.

1. Atlantic Moto can rent me a 450cc Maxi Scooter for 5 days. €250 deposit and €275 rental.

2. PluscarTenerife can rent me a Bmw 440i Convertible for 7 days, pick up and drop off at the Airport for €309, waiting on deposit amount. Seems very cheap??

Has anyone used either company before?

Also, if anyone has reccomendations on where to see or visit during our trip, good food places etc I'd highly appreciate it. We are staying at the Gran Tacande Wellness and Relax hotel.

Regards,
Nate

I would go for a car every time. I wouldn't want to risk a scooter! Check reviews of any Spanish car rental company. Some are rip off merchants when it comes to damage. Some are absolutely fine so it pays to check.

Factor in £30+ each way for the taxi if you don't have an airport pickup.

Obviously in Tenerife a trip up Teide is a must, amazing volcanic landscape. You can't get to the very top unless you pre-book though. Don't try it on a scooter though. It's a long and steep drive and our small car was struggling with the altitude.

Siam park is a very good water park if you're into that sort of thing. Easily as good as a Florida water park.

Edited to add...

Pluscar reviews are not good!

We were in Gran Canaria in March and hired a car through TopCar. Good reviews and were very reasonable. I will happily pay more to hire from a company with good reviews.

Yes. Definitely. Didn’t even check the car when I returned. Zero excess on all cars

Car for me.

If you go up any of the mountains you can sometimes get into the clouds and also there can be rain even though its bone dry at sea level and at the top.

Plus its faster. Plus its got air con!

I've used Pluscar Lanzarote about 5 times, never had a problem.

I just go into their local shop, rather than booking online. No extras to pay, everything is included in the quoted price.
I always pay cash, so no chance of post-holiday credit card charges.

Car for me.

Parking is generally easy and free in Tenerife.

But do rent bikes and cycle up tiede! (EBikes if beginner)

Appreciate all the advice lads, thank you.

The company offering the BMW haven't got back to me at all, won't even answer the phone. Because of that and some questionable reviews, I've went through SiXT and rented a Mazda MX5 for the 7 days, all confirmed and ready to go for only €228, which I thought was good. After reading some of your comments especially about clouds in the mountains etc, I decided that a car would certainly be a better option over a scooter/motorbike.

If anyone else has recommendations on activities or places to see or eat, let me know! Thanks a lot

Loro Park and Siam Park are both excellent. The lava tube caves are really interesting...book now before you go. The drive up to mount teide is really nice.

Got an MX5 from SiXT in the end for just over 200 euro. I tried AutoReisen with about 5 different cars but everytime I requested one, they emailed me back to say it was unavailable and all they had was Hyundai I10s and the like.

I would definitely drive up Teide. The landscape is unreal, like being on Mars!

Visited just Tenerife and Lanzarote.
The landscape in Lanzarote is unreal as well but chosen Tenerife since there is just "more things to do there".
My kids are now middle teens and they have been going there every year since they were toddlers.
If you choose a car then definitely just autoreisen or cicar.
Always wanted to hire a bike.
Was speaking to an English biker couple in the cable car waiting room last year and they really sold it to me.
Unfortunately no where to put the kids!
If you do go visit the whole island. Tenerife is just so much more than Las Americas and Los Cristianos.

Lots of restaurants around Los Christianos and Playa De las americas.

You have the musical fountains in Playa De Las Americas, and around that some nice chinese / indian / mexican and bianco (italian). We always have to go to Bianco everytime, as my wife loves that place.

Haven't been for a while, but was a good pizza place near santiago 3 self catering.

Playa De las Americas gets a bad rep but if you stay away from the Clubs / karaoke bars its not that bad. Has been becoming more upmarket as time has gone on.

Agreed. I've used them multiple times.

Tenerife on a scooter - at least on the motorways - sounds a bit dicey tbh

Glad you’ve opted for the car. Drive up Teide, and even do the cable car if you fancy it. Take something warm, we’ve been caught out with snow on the peak before.

Trip to Puerto de la Cruz and a slow drive home, over the twists on TF-436 if you fancy it. Should be fun in the Mazda.
