Flying to Paris next weekend and a bit pertrubed about the bed bug situation.

Is it a real thing?

Any quick remedies / precautions?

Take my own sheets?

DEET based insect repellant. Wear it when you sleep. Was once eaten alive backpacking in South America and used it every night after that. No problems with biting insects after that.

They get in your case too not just confined to beds and bedding. Make sure your case is clear before you unpack at home when you return

Just got back from France (no sign of punaises thankfully)

Other advice I read
- don’t put your suitcase on the floor, use the racks or put on furniture
- don’t put your suitcase on the bed including packing to leave
- don’t put dirty clothes onto the floor, straight into your suitcase

Buy some bug spray and nuke your luggage inside and out.

I was in Marseille a few weeks ago and got some pretty bad bites from the bed - this was a couple of weeks before tbe bed bug news.

Not sure there’s much you can do! Take some cream/spray they don’t like, check for bugs on arrival and try not to let any jump in/on your stuff.

Other than that, enjoy Paris!

+ keep your case/bags zipped up.

Wash all your clothes when you get home using a program over 50c and dry in the tumble dryer which should kill them off (according to something I read the other day).

You can also put your bags (and clothes) in the freezer overnight if you have the space, which will also do the trick.

Better put the plug in first to be extra sure.

Had a ski chalet in Paisey Vallendry. The place was riddled with them. Large group of 20 people of which 3/4 suffered a lot of bites.

Took loads of precautions when we got home and had no problems since

I can't stand wildfire BS viral news like this. Vegas has had the problem for donkeys years.

I get bitten in my own bed in summer....

It's probably gone wildfire news homed in on Paris as it's in a heatwave.

Just to update - just returned from 3 days in central Paris, 3 star hotel, no issues at all. Sprayed a fair bit of jungle spray on and around at night but didn't see any evidence of bed bugs.

I'm more thinking pest control conspiracy at this point.

Hadn't been to Paris since before Covid, haven't followed the politics closely but got to say it's been cleaned up massively (inside the ring road). Super impressed, just one bit of slightly duff restaurant service (I speak French), but all very chilled and friendly. Yes really.
