Dumbass question - never used the Easyjet Automated things...

We're allowed 22 kg each and just want to share one piece of luggage for the hold and one small carry on piece.

Can you tell these automated things that although the case is say 30 kg it is for two people or should we just have a small case each?

30kg is excess baggage in some airports anyway as it’s not a safe lift for one man.

You can't do it that way - do two smaller cases which are both within their limits.

As others have said your booking is for each passenger, individually to have a 22kg hold bag, not a combined 44kg weight limit. Basically these all come down to the weight of bag an employer can reasonably expect a member of baggage handling staff to lift (without injuring themselves and the employeer being liable) and that airport baggage handling systems can cope with.

32kg/70lbs is the international standard for overweight, anything over 23kg/50lbs will normally have a heavy tag on it.

You can pool your allowance up to 32kg ie if you each have a 23kg allowance totalling 46kg you can take one 32kg bag and one 14kg bag. Someone has quoted the EasyJet website where they clearly state that’s acceptable when travelling together on the same flight.
