Off to Luxembourg at the end of Nov for a full week, primarily for the Christmas markets.

I reckon we will spend a day or two in Luxembourg city, probably a train trip to Nancy one day, a trip to Trier another,
take a trip up the north of the country to visit some castles and stuff.

anything I'm missing on the must-do lists? I reckon I've got a couple of spare days

Thanks smile

No, it’s horrible.
You’ll hate it.
Don’t bother.

wink

Free public transport across the whole country - buses, trains, trams!
That means a journey to Trier, for example, is about €10 return as you only have to pay for the German part.

Christmas markets will be open soon.

Get to the castle in Vianden.

Wine region on the Moselle for tastings or combined with a boat cruise from Remich or Grevenmacher.

Walking tour of the capital village city: there’s a LOT of history here.

ETA: public transport link…. Download the app. It’s very good.

I have been a couple of times. I really like it.
It's not just an extension of its close neighbours. It's a bit different.

Metz is nice too. Cathedral and market worth a look and my son swears that it's nice to walk by the river (he's 18 going on 40 smile ). Certainly worth a mini wine tour too, Grevenmacher for some bubbles and down the Moselle valley if you have a car.

I grew up there… think a week might be a bit much!

RC gave you some good tips already, I would add the Casemates with are a UNESCO heritage site

Nightlife is concentrated near the Palais Granducal if that’s your thing

Pre covid travelled there regularly for work, one of the most depressing places I have been.

It is odd. I posted further up, I also went there for work twice a month for about 2 years, and I liked it so much I have been there twice with my wife since for leisure.

Popped over the border after visiting Bastogne, firstly to say I had been, but also to fill up on cheaper fuel.

How much cheaper it is now, I'm not too sure but it ought to save you at least the price of a couple of coffees.

Boat trip on the Moselle is a great idea.

I tend to find that we make the most of wherever we go. Last year we went to Dusseldorf for the Christmas markets. Not exactly the worlds most exotic destination, but we also travelled up and down the Rhine-Westphalia area. Loved ever minute of it
and i'm confident we will also enjoy Luxembourg and her neighbours!

OP,

I added a link to Mobiliteit.lu in my earlier response
I’d suggest downloading the app. It’s very good.
All public transport links and connections therein, trains, buses, trams

I’d also suggest taking free bus transport to Remich for the boat trip, then enjoying local wines whilst on board so as to not have any D&D risk. biggrin

Nightlife is more spread in the city now, not just around the palace, but also in Clausen (Rives de Clausen, renovated brewery buildings with bars and restaurants) and the Grund.

As for it being referred to as depressing, haha… well, it’s not for everyone, I guess.
I came here for a year or 2 and stayed. I’ve been here more than 25 years now!

If it's raining how about a quick walk around an excellent car dealer? They're just 10 mins from the airport: https://assetto-corsa.lu/

Don't threaten me with a good time! I love coffee and cake, Oberweis looks like it's on the Trier main market.... Great suggestion!

The Trier branch is the only one outside Luxembourg, I think.
Probably the best place in that location, too!
It’s a Luxembourg institution.

Well we’re sold on Luxembourg! To be honest I’d seen some photos from one of our friends who’d visited so had already considered. Looking at booking 3 nights before we head off down into France (Aix-Les Bains) then Epernay on our way back before heading for the Amsterdam-Newcastle ferry.
