Looking to arrange a bit of a touring holiday later in the autumn in Normandy and Brittany but at this stage with no fixed views on exactly where, other than I’d like to see a bit of both regions over the course of a few days. Have experience elsewhere in France just not in the north west.

Does anyone have any good suggestions for places that:

  • I can happily leave a Vantage overnight
  • Aren’t the usual chain stuff; I’m not averse to that generally, just not this time
  • provide the option of food for the weary traveller
  • budget relatively flexible
TIA

I don't think the car friendly bit is an issue in that part of France, pretty much anywhere will fit the bill.

2 places that I've been to and liked:

A Relais du (de?) Silence, right on the coast in the South of Brittany. Hotel restaurant has 1 Michelin star. No issues with car parking

This hotel in Trouville - has a private car park and there are several decent restaurants within easy walking distance.

I don't know if it's still a thing but pre/early internet when I used to visit France I was a regular user of Logis De France guides. These tended to be independently owned hotels with regional restaurants.

I think it's still a thing.

My favourite French accommodation site is https://www.bienvenueauchateau.com

Some are smart and expensive, some are lower cost. Most are B&B or gite rather than hotel, but I've stayed some lovely places. Being chateaux, there is always a large driveway or comfortable old barn to put a car in. I once had my Bristol up on axle stands made of logs taken from the chateau woodpile while bodging something effecting a running repair on the driveway.
