Family of an Edinburgh woman hit with cost of air ambulance.

https://www.edinburghlive.co.uk/news/edinburgh-new...

I suspect any quote for cover would have been high as the problem seems related to an existing back problem.

Poor thing, but the article said she was declared back to full health after an operation in Scotland, so insurance shouldn’t have been that much. Certainly not 43k…

Reads like she has insurance but they won’t cover this event.

Travel insurance companies do want to know details of recent problems, and if you’re under any treatment or investigations.

It’s also not widely known that if anything happens after you’ve taken the insurance, you need to update them - it not like car insurance where you can update it annually.

There seems to be endless amounts of this news happen, the cycle goes;

1. Local pointless news channel publishes article that gets Google click bait by people searching the country name
2. Some irrational dipst doesn't take travel insurance for £20 quid
3. Dipst has a irrational "accident" (notice this article dosn't declare this along with many others)
4. Said dipsts family decide to run a digital begging bowl (Justgiving)

I tried that when my dad was reaching the end and we had a DisneyWorld trip booked. The agent patiently listened as I listed all the things wrong with him and then she said “thanks for letting us know, we’ll exclude all those from cover”.

My aunt loves her trips to Turkey. She has some serious health issues. She always gets insurance that covers them but it costs more than the holiday itself each time.

We were getting quotes for £1k for a cruise round the Caribbean. But we’re old with a load of health conditions.

At those prices it’s temping not to but you’d be crazy not to have insurance for that area.

Unless she’s got a load of underlying health issues that woman’s insurance shouldn’t be unaffordable.

Why would one be crazy not to have insurance in place for a cruise in the Caribbean? Is a cruise not incredibly low risk to personal health and financial loss on the grand spectrum of common travelling and holiday types? Obviously incidents such as the Concordia happen, but this is very rare.

If you get ill the medical centres on cruise ships are legendary for absolutely reaming people and you don't have an alternative.

And they will offload you at next port of call and arrange for an ambulance to take you to hospital if your illness requires more care than the on board medical centre can provide. If you are in the EU you can cover the hospital cost with a GHIC but elsewhere in the world the costs could be ruinous.

Friends of ours' racked up a £30k insurance bill when their son was helicoptered off a cruise ship in the Carribean. Pneumonia was the cause.

Flown to a French island for treatment and then business class home.

Insurance company quibbled as he'd pneumonia before, but it's not a condition that re-occurs. Eventually paid out.

Her company stumped up the cash to help her out so everyone who donated is being refunded.
