Christmas meal NYC
Discussion
So we will be in New York on Christmas Day this year, currently looking for a place for Christmas dinner, doesn’t have to be traditional, just decent food and a good atmosphere.
We are staying about 2 blocks from the Empire State Building and Bryant park, so within a 10 - 15 min walk would be ideal ideally towards Times Square, as our friends are over that way.
Looking for a table for 8 people as we are meeting friends. Cost is a bit of a factor as spending Christmas in New York is already costing quite a bit for a family of 4.
Any recommendations would be much appreciated

one please to consider (if you can book it in now) is Rolfs on the east side, Austrian/ Swiss kind a place thats decked out in Christmas vomit all year around
https://rolfsnyc.com
Lilies Victorian establishment also goes balls deep in Christmas garb, it basically a casual pub

Note Americans dont normally have turkey for Christmas, its eaten at Thanks given and i cant blame them for not wanting it a month later!

Did go to New York for Christmas with the family around 10yrs ago For Christmas lunch we just went into one of the thousands of restaurants and were served more food than we could eat with a busy pleasant atmosphere . The locals didn't seem to go for what we have at home . Some in our party wanted Turkey so we had what they serving Turkey club sandwich, salad and chips. desert New York cheese cake .
Couldn't eat it all , enjoy your trip we certainly did .
In hindsight wouldn't have qued up for 4hrs to go up the empire state. Weather wasn't that good up there.

Coincidence!! It's on the corner of 3rd and East 49th, and I' currently staying at the Hilton Garden Inn on 3rd and East 52nd. I've walked past it a dozen times in the last few days. I'm not going to tell you where we always go on xmas day, as it's already a tough enough reservation to get and the window hasn't opened for it yet
(and it's also nowhere near your desired location either) , but there are no shortage of places open. Remember that the US - and NY in particular - has a large non celebrating population. All the jewish friends I have go out to a chinese restaurant as a tradition for example. Thanksgiving is far quieter with far more places closed.
I can highly recommend quality bistro - it's on 55th/ 6th and is walkable from where you are staying, and they will definitely seat 8. Share a tableside butter service (honestly, just trust me), some apps, the french onion soup (some of the best in the city) and then a tomahawk for four (which will feed 8). It's a classy place and good vibe.
As for cost, it's honestly all expensive here right now, plus the tax, and then you will have the mandatory 20% gratuity (regardless of service) for a party greater than six, and they will no doubt will be expecting more because holiday. Quality bistro however is great food for not outrageous prices without verging into ridiculous territory.
Just be advised that many popular/rated places restrict their bookings to 30 or 14 days out and fill up fast, so get that reservation in early when the time comes!

I want a good atmosphere (not a festive one) so have opted for a chain christmas day lunch (well mid-afternoon reservation) - which will be at the Hard Rock Cafe on Times Square.
Its a very easyology solution for me/us and I know my daughter loves the food at HRC.
Given we are doing the festive breakfast at the hotel on the morning itll be a decent counterpoint for a meal.

We have been to a few hard rock venues and they have always been ok.
I have just checked and it will allow me to make a reservation for Christmas Day early evening

Highly recommend going to see the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall if time/budget permits, it's a bit of a Christmas institution in NYC and felt very festive.
Ha ha, thanks for that. That comment has just cost me $680.00

I just booked 4 tickets for Christmas Day.
