Luxembourg City
Discussion
My wife has decided she would like to visit Luxembourg for a few days early next year to celebrate her birthday.
Has anyone got any recommendations for a nice hotel? We will be driving so a decent car park is essential.
Suggestions for things to see and do also gratefully recieved.
Thanks.

Can you give us a bit more to go on? Is it anything goes or are you on a budget? Do you want to be in the centre and walk everywhere or are you be happy to be out of town and drive in and to other locations (and by the way the tram is excellent and the funicular worth a go)? Driving during rush hour is definitely to be avoided by the way and actually most public transport is fairly unpleasant then too to be honest.
It's a big birthday for my wife. Will be going mid week. Don't think we want a cheap and cheerful hotel, prefer something better. We don't want to be in the commercial part of the city, more the old bit if possible as it is a bit more interesting apparently. Will probably walk around rather than bus it.

You can be the tourist sap that lines the taxi drivers’ pockets if you like.
They’re a f
king rip off here, so much so that even Uber is run by a monopoly taxi firm!
(Resident since 1998….. “I remember when all this was fields…. “)
(ETA: parking in the city is expensive. Suggest you leave the car somewhere outside the city and make the most of the aforementioned free public transport. If EARLY next year, bear in mind the potential weather conditions… snow, minus 15…. Potentially.)

RC1807,
We’re going to the first linked hotel in your post week before Christmas,
looking at your comments re taxi’s being a rip off, any suggestions re transfer from airport ?
Thanks Matt
Free Buses or second link suggests costs for taxis.

Paying myself - Bus, company expensed, Taxi

Used to live there a few years back and visit now for work.
Bus is as quick and sometimes quicker than a taxi,
With a car, I’d go melia, Sofitel or Novotel in kirchberg
Without hotel place des armes is lovely and in the city, but as a city with lots of commerce there are no shortage of good hotels.
The city is nice to go around, casements are worth a look.
If you have transport the castle at vianden is nice and there are some great vineyards to visit.
Boat trip at remich on the Moselle is pleasant
Good choice for a short city break

Get the Mobiliteit app. You can set the language. Easy to use.
If you're going for a 'nice' weekend then I say just bite the bullet and pay for the parking at the hotel rather than faff about getting tram/buses every time you might want to use the car. The cost per day is only about the same as a single margherita (or margarita!).
Hotel Le Royal is right in the centre, very traditional upscale place with an underground car park which isn't too expensive considering its location and the fact it's a 5-star.
There's also a Sofitel in the city centre which is nice (do visit the cocktail bar on the top floor just before dusk for a great view of the city centre as the sun sets!) but the area it's in isn't the greatest and it shares a public car park which is relatively expensive compared to others.
Mama Shelter and Melia are in the Kirchberg district (along with another Sofitel) which is only a few mins on the tram to the city centre. MS is a bit funkier with a good bar and some...interesting TV movies in the room! Again, they both have parking, although Mama Shelter's can get full if you're arriving late.

The buses and tram are free, frequent, and clean. You can get from the airport direct or with maybe one change to most places in the city.
Taxis in Lux are only for people who can submit the receipts!
Your wife has made a good choice, Luxembourg was one of the suprise highlights of my holiday.
It's everything we thought Liechtenstein would be. History everywhere, a romantic fortress city. One of the best cities to just have a wander in, around every corner is like a new fantasy scene.
Liechtenstein on the other hand, it's like going on holiday to Bracknell-in-the-Alps, a country where all personality and charm was surgically removed in the 1960s.
Unfortunately I can't advise on hotels restaurants and bars as we were very much on the budgetest of budget holidays. Expect €35 for an average main there, and €10 a drink!
But just going on a proper sightseeing walk, the walls plus the standard cathedrals & monuments etc. could easily fill a full day. We did miss out on the Grand Ducal palace and the National Art and History museum and they look great in pictures, so I'd give those a look.
We parked in "The Most Beautiful Car Park", suprisingly cheap and a very scenic 15 minute walk into the old town, so don't let a lack of parking put you off a hotel you really fancy.
