Cathay Pacific Economy London to Hong Kong. Thoughts or experiences?

And don't say "don't do it" or "upgrade to business class". I'm not paying, and it's already booked. Just wondering what it's likely to be like.

I always look on Youtube for somebody who has paid for their own fare, not a travel vlogger.

I haven’t done it since 2008.
Flew economy, LHR - HKG
Seats were ok, IFE was ok, food was ok, and I kept getting ore white wine, so I was ok too. smile

(Mine was paid for by someone else, too….not my business.)

Nothing spectacular, but if I was flying, I would pick the A350 flight for the quieter cabin.
Meal wise, they cater for their main market, so it'll be fine if you like Chinese food!

Pre Covid days, my first choice was Virgin as you could pick up PE flights for £700-800, but since their withdrawal, CP is probably the best of the rest for direct flights.

It's a 777-300. To be honest, I find them all much of a muchness, apart from the Dreamliner which is bloody brilliant.

I like English Chinese food, but always find Chinese Chinese food a poor substitute for the real thing hehe

I like Cathay. The 777s are getting old now, but they do have some "newer" ones that tend to operate the longer routes. I always did wonder why they use the 777s on the LHR route - they use A350s out of MAN. I guess its a cargo / capacity thing.

The last Cathay 777 I flew on was HKG to NRT and that was a really nice experience, IIRC it was 23 years old and was in excellent condition. Only a short hop for it so we were up to cruise like a rocket.

I always seek the 350/380/787 these days for long flights due to better cabin pressure and higher cruise above the weather, but if it does not bother you then I think it will be just as good/bad as any other main brand eco flight.

Always found the food good. I dont know about in economy but in business they do a great burger on demand.

I flew last March to HKG with them. I thought they were reasonable. I paid for it myself for my family. The room was reasonable for economy and the infotainment screen was an ok size but lacking the usual colour contrast. Food was decent and they gave you metal cutlery.

I lost my Kindle on the plane. I called up their support. They had found it and I was able to pick it up at the airport on my return flight so that was nice.

There was a period awhile back where they gave out those crappy plastic utensils I think because they were afraid that somebody would weaponise their bit of metal and hijack the plane.

It's either that or I was slumming it with some budget carriers at the time.

12.5 hours due to not overflying Russia or Ukraine, it'd be much shorter without that impediment.

About an hours difference. Good job jet fuel isn’t too expensive at the moment.

Do they usually have a "snack station"? I fly long haul about once a month, twice sometimes, and both Virgin and Emirates do this. An area where you can go and help yourself to a soft drink, tea or coffee, and a biscuit, crisps, or similar.

Do this route about once a month at the moment, and am lucky enough that sometimes I am not in the back!

The 7's run all the busy flights, most of these are full every day (4-5 non stops a day on CX alone on that route I think!), I think its split 2 x 350's, 3 x 777, if you want the A350 you have to do the daytime flights/less popular time flights (which don't land first thing in the morning), which is really annoying as the A350 hard product is better!

I like CX, their hard product is good in all cabins, though the IFE screens are showing their age really, as the resolution isn't great, but normally a good pick of movies, TV and music infact! The service is good, much better than most European carriers I find and if you're nice and courteous I find that pressing the button a few times through the flight for more adult grape juice is promptly answered, and not with a scowl.

Meant to say, you can check the movies before you go I think on the website, so you can decide if they're what you want to watch

Food it pretty good, both western and Chinese really, the pot noodle snack available at anytime is the winner though... I think I've had 4 of those on a flight before.

The PE is good, depending on budget might be worth the upgrade depending on how you sleep or whether you're on the plane for a long daytime flight...

Time wise - bad news, with the Ukraine issue, its about 12.5 hours to HKG, and about 13.5-14 with holds coming back...

I've done it a few times on my way to Taiwan (via HK). I always book economy but with an emergency exit seat. No real complaints in terms of VFM.

Literally just (as in this morning) flew back from HK with them, in economy.

I find them leagues ahead of BA, Virgin etc. Good legroom and generally pleasant experience.

So I'm back now. It was fine, no complaints at all. And the CP staff at HK check in were great. I was travelling with hand luggage that couldn't be x-rayed, so the young lady on the desk personally escorted me thru security and explained in Cantonese to the security staff. Also she gave me a slight upgrade, to seat 39C, aisle seat at the very front of economy so loads of legroom.
