2nd Passport options
Discussion
My eldest is off on a lads holiday in June, we then have a family holiday in the US in July, I'm trying to mitigate for the chances of him misplacing his passport whilst away for the week, which would then jeopardise the main family holiday. I guess there are 2 options:
1) Request a second passport, I'm not sure how easy theses are to get. I assume it would be a case of saying he is going to somewhere like Cuba and then the US, as I believe US immigration don't like Cuba stamps in passports ?
2) If he looses it get an emergency replacement, we've about 2 weeks between him getting home and the family going away, can you get a replacement passport in 2 weeks ?
Thanks
Michael

There is nothing stopping you applying for a second passport but whether you get one is based on individual circumstance. I don't think "in case you lose one" is generally considered grounds for a second one, but you can try:

Second passport - can be difficult. Usually you need (for example) a letter from your employer saying that you are important to a UK business, and need the second passport as with just one it can often be stuck at embassies waiting visa, hampering your globetrotting exploits benefiting the UK
Is this where parenting is now? You can trust him to go on holiday but can’t trust him not to lose his passport?
2 options:
1) Trust him
2) Don’t let him go
If he’s that much of a f
kwit that he can’t look after his passport, he’ll probably end up in Spanish jail or hospital anyway on a lads holiday.

HM Passport Office does not usually allow more than 1 passport per person but may issue additional passports to customers who:
1. have a genuine need for one and can provide evidence to show it
2. meet the criteria in this guidance

Can’t imagine this even being a thought for my mum and dad.2 options:

Also; go to airport and use passport. Go to hotel and use passport. Go to airport and use passport.
Only need to use it a few times. How can you lose it?
I used to have two passports, as i often had to travel with work, and sometimes certain countries took weeks to issue a visa, And i often needed to travel while that was happening.
From memory i .had to prove my job required it, and it also cost quite alot, cant remember how much as it was a few years ago.
But it is certainly doable.

Tell him to stick it in a ziplock bag along with an airtag or similar after use, at least if it gets mislaid he can use an app to try and locate it.I guess they just thought that it was my issue to deal with.

I used to have two passports - Needed a letter from work about travel to countries requiring visas (need to travel while one was being processed). When one expired I sent it off for renewal without a letter and it was rejected (despite being a replacement of an existing passport). Just be aware that if your application is rejected, you don’t get the money back…

This is how I got mine. Letter signed by 2 board members from work. Requiring a passport in daily life then, living outside the UK. Travelling loads for work, often requiring visas to countries that shouldn't see I'd been to certain countries. As for your son, this isn't going to happen......
(I now have 3 nationalities so 4 passports, 2 of them issued by the UK authority. That works for me!)
When I had two passports it was based on "incompatible countries" and I used one for US/Israel/UK/Europe and one for China/Russia/UAE - to apply I called the passport office, explained I was concerned about easy access to the US with a Chinese/Russian VISA and they told me in step by step form what I needed to do on the forms etc. to be issued with a second passport.
Admittedly this was 10 years+ ago so the liklihood of their being such a phone line still is probably slim but it wasn't any sort of problem or unusual request and it was all processed very quiciky.
However I think the chances of being allowed two just because you want one as a spare is pretty slim!
