I’m use to going to Wales for mountain biking trips with the “guys” and slumming it in b&b or outdoor style hotels and hostels but fancy doing a car road trip from south to north in the summer with the wife as part of my 40th birthday present to myself. Has anyone got any recommendations for nice hotels - did stay at Porteirolion a few years ago which was lovely

Depending on where you are planning to start from in the south Mansion House at Llanstaffen could be worth a look. I stayed there a few years ago and it was great - if you are there in summer/good weather the view from the garden is stunning.

The St Brides Hotel and Spa in Saundersfoot is nice ( as a South Wales option ).

I've heard that from colleagues.

I quite fancy trying the Harbourmaster in Aberaeron for a weekend with my best friend. My OH and I go there regularly for fish and chips and a walk around the harbour.

Will be starting in Essex with a plan to drive straight across to FOD area up the m4 for the first day of activity. Want to do a bit of fun activities and sit seeing as well (think castles, walks, bounce below). Thinking of a Monday to Friday to avoid some of the summer rush so looking at only 1 to 2 nights in the same spot.

Nice place but limited parking and no hotel car park, you have to kind of park around the back. It's safe enough but depends if you wanted nice big secure parking or not

Near to Bala, one of the nicest places I've ever stayed, not cheap but worth it.

True. Lovely views though over the beach. There's a country house type place as well near Narbeth. Really nice. I can't remember the name.

That's the one I was thinking of "The Grove" very nice indeed.

Another one I'd love to try:

Slebech Park in Pembrokeshire

https://www.slebech.co.uk/

OH and I have walked from Blackpool Mill to Slebech (and the ruined church you can just see in the trees on the left) many times.

I know the owner, he also now owns Penmaenuchaf - that’s as exceptional, we had the suite and the junior suite there, both stunning.

And a quite exceptional restaurant-with-rooms, Ynyshir.

How about the Bear in Crickhowell? Crick is a really lovely spot.

Lake Vyrnwy
Vyrnwy and Palè are close, but Palé wins hands down. Does an amazing afternoon tea.

Quay Hotel in Deganwy is nice, great for Llandunno and Conwy.

Ruthin Castle is a special place, albeit needs some cash spending on it IMHO.
