Hi all

Been looking at holidays for September and the cost for the standard Greek or Spanish island type place is just really off putting. Anything remotely nice is either longer on a plane than we would like or a bit too expensive for us at the moment.

I think there might be a better time and value to be had by jumping on a cheap flight, hiring a car and an airbnb and getting out and about exploring.

My little one will be around "19 months" at the time of travel. We would like somewhere safe although we won't be wandering round capital cities late at night with a young child, we will get out and about during the day and back to the accommodation at night.

As for the weather - open to warm or cooler locations. Would happily go somewhere different like Norway or Finland as well as somewhere warmer like Croatia.

Any recommendations appreciated, just looking for a somewhere nice to explore, good food, nice scenery.

We haven't had a proper holiday outside of the UK since before Covid so would like it to be a good one.

Thanks!

Try this to see if it throws up something nice:
Go to EasyJet holidays.
Select a rough date when you’d like to go and come back, then set it to +/- 7 days.
Choose a few airports near where you are or that you wouldn’t mind driving to
Choose “anywhere” as the destination
Set the number of people then run the search.

When it runs, filter to whatever hotel rating you want, maybe 3 star or better, then select Tripadvisor rating of 4 dots or better.
Sort by price low to high and see what it throws up. If you want to exclude the further flung locations then there’s a filter for flight duration.

Unfortunately their sale finished a couple of days ago, but I’m not convinced these discount codes take that much off. That should, with any luck, throw up some decent enough options, especially if you can travel in the period after the English schools go back & before the Scottish October holiday.

You can also repeat this on OnTheBeach, LoveHolidays or any of the other travel agencies, these ones will generally throw up Ryanair flights as being on their cheaper packages but often don’t include luggage or transfers, EasyJet will include this on a beach holiday but not a city break. If you’re near London try BA Holidays, you might be lucky there, elsewhere sometimes Jet2 have OK deals but they’re generally more expensive than either EasyJet or one of the online travel agencies.

Good luck!

Try Guernsey.

Weather will be nice.
Easily warm enough to swim in the sea.

Lots to do.
Day trip to Herm, WW2 stuff, great beaches, very safe and friendly.

You can search Skyscanner by flight price. Select your airport(s) for departure and your dates then search "everywhere" for destinations and pick the cheapest that takes your fancy.

Croatia. Cheap flight to Venice, 2 hrs easy drive to Rovinj. There was a recent thread on pula. It’s good value, decent food, very relaxed and family friendly. Medulin / Pomer might be a good option as there are several glamping type resorts with log cabins and safari tents for around £50 a night.

Be aware of car hire as in the Canaries it is very cheap and hassle-free but in mainland Spain, it is far more expensive (or ten times the hassle for cheap hire) so the "saving" tends to evaporate.

A few ideas

1: algarve, head down to Lagos, bit more chilled, weather good and with a car enough to see, cheap flights into faro or Lisbon and drive down

2: biarritz, flight into biarritz itself or Toulouse, plenty of Airbnb in anglet, weather should be on in September and plenty to see including northern Spain - San Sebastián etc.

3: Italian lakes, cheap flights into Milan, lake Garda region has loads of places, day trips I to Verona or even Venice

4: north Spain , area around Santiago, Ila de Arousa is nice chilled out place
