Daughter #2 will be in Uni in Australia (Queensland) this christmas, so rather than us visit her (it'll be too hot where she is) or vice-versa (she doesn't want to) I'm looking for an interesting option to meet up over the christmas period that's halfway between the 2.

Ideally somewhere warm. Toying with somewhere we can go multi-day hiking (as we have all been on Caminos and frankly loved them) but that's not a must.

Thanks

I had a similar thought recently to meet up with my mate from Sydney. Be interested to see what others have to say.

You could look at where the typical stop overs are. But I liked the sound of SK for something different. KL could be an easy option, English is well spoken and beaches an countryside plus the track at Sepang for petrol heads.

Or just hit up Japan and have KFC hehe

I think the obvious answer is Thailand. There's the beaches in Phuket, the markets in Bangkok and great walking in the Golden Triangle north of Chang Mai. There's also Kanchanaburi, a must visit if you've seen The Bridge on the River Kwai.

Another option would be Cambodia- meet in Penom Penh and head to Ankor Wat.

We absolutely loved Thailand, but since we have done that, that's off the menu. I also have it in my head to have a longer holiday to Cambodia and Vietnam on another occasion, but great ideas thumbup

Malaysia is a good shout. TBH I know sweet FA about it so I'll do some digging. SK - South Korea? have seen a few programs but so far I haven't bitten the bug for it. Japan is somewhere the wife wants to go (we both do) but she wants to go there when the cherry blossoms are out, which alas won't be at christmas. Again great shouts though. thumbup

Meet up in the Philippines. Do some diving. It’s nice there. Plus a lot of the women have curvier figures than Thailand due to the Spanish men copulating happily with the locals for many years back when they were colonised.

That may not be of direct relevance but it’s interesting to look at the difference at least.

SE Asia is a 12 hour flight away. Turkey would be closer to Europe and Turkish Airlines have been expanding into Oz.

It's also peak season in Dec in Thailand so it will be priced accordingly. Good weather though.

Alternatively if you both want long flights, Canada or South America.

Malaysia or Singapore make sense geographically. Singapore is calmer and cleaner than Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur is somewhere in the middle.

If you don't mind a few hours on a coach then you can see both, most of them hate designed for long journeys with big reclining seats etc. this opens up Georgetown and Langkawi as options from KL

Friends of mine in a similar situation met their Sydney-based daughter in Sri Lanka just before Christmas last year. Worked out well for them.

No one has mentioned Hong Kong. It has some of the best hiking for day trips, e.g, the Maclehose Trail. I did this in 2016 and would do it again in a flash. Beautiful scenery and great eating stops. Language is easy and flights are relatively cheap. I was working there so did the whole trail over about 5 days in an elapsed time of 10 weeks. Just sublime - you could do it in 4 days or less. Scenery is to die for.
