This seems to be a Minefield of extortion.

Rental firms offer a service i understand now but you pay a daily charge plus the tolls themselves.

Or do i just go in and buy a sunpass and register?

I will be in tampa area with a couple of trips to orlando so wont see many tolls for the ten days.

Buy Sunpass, much simpler.

When I was there last year I bought one of these passes at the airport:

Worked fine for me.

Yep, worked a treat. Many tolls are cheaper using the pass too.

I think you can only pick it up, and drop it off, at MCO - don’t know if there another pick up solution.

Sadly not - MCO terminals are the only locations for the Visitor Toll Pass - their app is decent though and updates live as your passing through tolls.

You can buy a sunpass at pretty much any Walgreens though as an alternative.

Just set Google maps to avoid toll roads. It doesn't add much time to your journey.

If at MCO, use visitor toll pass, but even then the machine is at T1, which is a PITA if you fly into T2 and useless for MLB and Tampa.

If not MCO, I usually take the charge per day toll pack where they add up to 35 dollars per fortnight on top of the actual toll costs, ask what they charge. They only levy the daily fee on days you use a toll road.

The all inclusive toll pack is a waste of money unless you re doing extensive touring, as most days I don t even go on the toll roads.

Be aware though, that despite the internet telling you otherwise, there are fewer and fewer roads that have a cash booth, and those that do only take coins, it s not an option.

Same thing with us back in March this year (Hertz). About £20 for driving in and out of St Petersburg for the Indycar race - and if we had been a bit cannier we could probably have avoided that. Certainly better than the £100+ we were offered when collecting the car.

No tolls when driving round Orlando, to Kennedy Space Centre, across to Tampa and Indian Rocks and back again - so there won't be that many toll roads.

I’ve just used the manned / unmanned pay toll booths and paid cash any time I’ve went and I’ve drove to gulf coast and Atlantic coast from Orlando. It’s no issue just keep some change in the car.

Thanks for input.

We usually do pay cash/card on any tolls but last time we was there it was ten years ago so auto tolls were only just coming in.

On the hire company charge option, if I choose to take the option and say only use 1 day of driving on tolls do I just get charged 1 day + Fees for the toll?

I used the visitor toll pass, download the app, set it up, get a tag, put the reg into the app when you get your car, chuck the tag behind the rear view mirror and away you go.

We went from Orlando to Daytona and the KSC, as well as all the parks etc. and it only cost about $20 in tolls for the 2 weeks. You pre-load it with $10 when you open the account, then it charges anything left over when you end the period and drop the tag back.

That probably included their fee.

I think I'll get a sunpass from a Publix when arriving.

Shame they don't do the visitor pass like MCO.

I use Alamo exclusively when renting in Florida and only ever got charged tolls on the I4 between Tampa and KSC, and on the toll roads around Miami and certain routes around Tampa, for example the Sunshine Skyway bridge in St Pete. They only charge a toll convenience fee on days a toll road is used. If you never use a toll road they won't charge you anything. And they send a receipt a day or so after returning the car.
