Any suggestions for "boutiquey" style hotels in October, 5-6 day break.

Good food, no kids or pool required!

Done both. Preferred Porto, but Lisbon was nice too.

If you'd consider self catering Mrs Loto and I stayed here in 2023 - very comfortable and right in the heart of it all. We loved Porto, more so than Lisbon - it has so much character and the food and people are fabulous. Food market is a must.

Personally having done both this last two years I preferred Lisbon.
Porto was rammed even at the end of October. Thought the area near the river was a bit tacky.
Rest of city was nice though.

If I had the choice I’d go back to Lisbon

my wife and I did both before lockdowns, walking from Lisbon to Porto on our way to Spain.
Porto was better

Coimbra - half way between the two was also really good.

I would recommend driving or flying though.

We much preferred Porto. It can be crowded along the river, but there are lots of less crowded streets to wander as well.

As someone said don't miss Mercado do Bolhão.

Hotel will depend on budget, but PortoBay Flores is really good.

We loved Porto (although it can be busy by the river-front), but also love drinking Port.

We did the wine/port and lunch tasting experience at Grahams and it was brilliant, very interesting, great food and lots of lovely Port to try including white and 10/20/30 year olds (in their library).

Most normal restaurants also serve a very good range of ports.

Can’t help with hotels, we rented apartments. Having been to both, they are both very nice, but to us Lisbon was much more interesting. Especially if you will be there for 5-6 days.
Lisbon has great water front, castle on top of hill is a great visit. It’s good fun riding in the vintage trams. And you can catch a train and visit Sintra, for the day, to visit the Pena palace, catch a tuctuk up and down the hill.
