A rather morbid subject.
My mother has just been diagnosed with advanced lung cancer; we do not have a time period at the moment.
I am due to go on Holiday early September and do not know what the situation will be then, I expect not to be travelling. Does anyone know of a cancellation insurance that will cover these circumstances. The booked holiday does not have cancellation included.

Doesn't a normal travel insurance policy cover this?
I am pretty sure that all tw previous policies I have had include holiday cancellation due to illness, including close relatives.

You'd need to read the text carefully. Certainly when I use a comparison website to get a price the question about knowing about events/illnesses that could cause you to need to return comes up.

Most do but cannot find any that cover pre existing conditions.

Look up "insure with" specialist insurer for those with existing medical conditions

Just to clarify, the holiday is already booked, but no form of travel insurance in place prior to finding out about your mother's diagnosis?

Mother is not travelling herself, correct?

Definitely not got any existing cover from a bank account or credit card etc?

Do policies cover holidays booked prior to the commencement of the policy?

Yes, most travel insurance policies will cover holidays booked before the insurance was taken out, provided the policy's effective date is before the date of the holiday.

Aren't all holidays booked prior to commencement of the policy. People book their holiday, then buy their travel insurance.

No, we, like a lot of people, have an annual policy.

Isn't it a usual there is a clause about declaring existing conditions? i.e. if you know about the diagnosis prior to taking out the insurance, you won't be covered. That's why they say book your insurance at the same time as your holiday.

Appreciate that's not what you want to hear and sorry to hear about your situation.

Agree, I run an annual policy, as it provides cover for these sorts of things. If you're dropping money on a holiday, i'd want to cover myself.

Out of the blue, the missus was hospitalized on day 1 of our June holiday last year, diagnosed with Ovarian cancer. That was a pricey 5 night stay in a Spanish private hospital. We had a few more in the pipeline, so well worth the small outlay to have that all come back.

What about the existing conditions of close family members who aren't travelling with you, but whose illnesses might stop you from travelling.

Mum passed away peacefully at the weekend.

Lesson learnt - will now have continuous annual travel policy.

Sorry to hear that, OP, as the holiday isn't one you can cancel, maybe see how you feel in a few months.

Though it could be worth contacting the company now anyway. They may surprise you, irrespective of what their official policy is.
