I’ve recently sold my 911 that I really only used for driving to Europe once or twice a year.

I’m thinking about not replacing it for next year and just flying in to somewhere and rent a car for the trip. Looks like it would be something like a Z4 unless I wanted to spend silly money.

Flying in opens up all sorts of options so keen to hear any recommendations for where to fly in to and where to go for a week before returning to the same place to return the car.

It would be late April or early May so many Alpine passes may still be closed, Pyrenees maybe?

We flew to Stuttgart and hired a Z4 M40i and did a loop around Germany/Switzerland for 8 days, short summary is on this thread:

https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

It worked really well. Cost of car hire plus flights was about the same as a EuroTunnel Flexi ticket plus fuel to drive there, with the advantage of ending up with a left-hand drive convertible. The Z4 also has a relatively big boot for a 2 seater convertible, 280 litres, which is not affected by putting the roof up/down, unlike most convertibles, which prevent you from raising the roof with a full boot (or you just use about half of it).

All the roads we went on will be open then, only the passes are shut and we only went on the SustenPass.

Thanks. Looks like a good trip and it’s hard to look beyond this sort of thing but I’ve done similar before and thought maybe flying to a new to me location might be worth a go.

When you hired with Sixt did you have to sort out your own vignette for Switzerland?

Yes, we just stopped at the border, bought one and stuck it to the windscreen.

Since you have to fly can I suggest Romania. Miss Bucharest in high summer. If your OK with budget airlines lots of destinations . Suceava for the painted monasteries. If you want a drive the Bicaz gorge and the Lacul Rosu. Or flight to Sibu or Brasov, Bran castle, drive the Transfăgărășan highway.

Up side good value food and accommodation , very cheap drink, driving can be interesting, and many speak a bit of english.

Stunning country. Highly recommended.

If the undiscovered bits of Europe float your boat, I'd add southern Albania to the list of possibles. Stunning scenery and superb roads, many of which have only recently been built or overhauled. The coast road between Saranda and Vlore is spectacular. Head inland toward Korca and then across the border to Macedonia and Lake Ohrid.

As your looking at flying could you do somewhere thats not as easily done by car such as Majorca or Gran Canaria?

Both have some great roads and arent easy to drive to.
