Entertaining evening in London that's not a musical
Discussion
In November we are going to London for the weekend for my Wife's birthday. Neither of us are really into musicals, but it feels like that's the main thing people suggest for an entertaining night out. We may still do that, but what are the alternatives for a special entertaining night out for 2 northerners who aren't multi-millionaires?

Can confirm its a brill night out. Order a bottle of bubbly (quite cheap if bought with the tickets) to the table though as the bar can be quite slow. we were sat right at the edge of the dance floor/stage and had a great view
To some extent it will depend on where you are staying and how far you are willing to travel.
Working in London for the last 2 years, staying over for a few nights per week you can get around and see/do some things, but each area has it's own unique charm/events.
I assume this is just the evening you are discussing here, so plenty of bars, nice restaurants and catering for all budgets. Is Abba Voyage of interest, what about the Mamma Mia food/theatre thing. I say these as my wife and few friends went some months ago. Not my cup of tea but they enjoyed it.

We're there for 2 nights, but it's mainly something at least a bit special for the Saturday night. I'm ok with getting around London as I go there a few times a year for work. We're staying on Fleet Street.
As someone mentioned above, "Contol Room B" at Battersea Power Station is well worth visiting for a drink. You'll need to book. you can get there on the Thames Clipper, Uber boat service. Various restaurants out by the river - Tapas Brindisa recommended. Cinnamon Kitchen just under the railway arches if you fancy an Indian. If you want music but not a stage musical, check out "Pizza Express Live" (Holborn or Soho) or "28-50 By Night" for dinner and music. Again, you'll need to book.
If you're staying on Fleet St there's a famous old pub called The Seven Starts just behind the law courts on Carey St. Oldest/narrowest pub in Britain or some such thing.
You could walk from Fleet St to "Ceru" Restaurant at Farringdon. Excellent, and you'll see the old Smithfield meat market. Or if you're feeling fancy wander along to Bank for sunday lunch at the Coq D'Argent at 1 Poultry. Top quality restaurant offering an extensive Sunday menu at a fixed price (because the City is quiet at the weekend). Outdoor terrace for eating in nice weather and great views over the City.
Walk over the pedestrian suspension bridge between St Paul's Cathedral and the Tate Modern (free entry). There's a free viewing gallery up high at Tate Modern.
Roman "Mithraeum" temple under the Bloomberg building near Bank. Free entry but book ahead.
"Sky Garden" at the walkie-talkie building. free entry but book ahead.
Decent all-day food in Covent Garden at Balthazar.
