We're off to Croatia in Summer and I'm having a bit of trouble tracking down a car hire company thats not going to rip us off! All the reviews for the companies near the airport are pretty bad! Does anyone have a recommendation?

Do none of the usual suspects like Hertz or Sixt have a desk at the airport?

it's difficult to be ripped off if you know the prices in advance and have fully comp insurance - either from the provider or via an excess policy. most bad reviews will be down to people who don't understand that.

We used Avia last autumn and were impressed. Booked through DiscoverCars IIRC. They're outside about a 100m walk opposite the terminal, no queue, pleasant folk and it was a brand new car.
Be aware that if you're taking a ferry to any of the islands there is a surcharge.

Cheers guys just wanted some real world recommendations. Never really seen such a cluster of poor reviews when it comes to hire cars!

Whoever you choose to rent with, make sure their office is actually in the terminal- several of the companies have an office that is actually a 5-10 min walk away!

We used Avia-Rentacar. It's a 1 min walk outside the terminal. Walk through the car park barrier, turn right, just down the road. No hardship at all. 69 Euros for 5 days, Opel Mokka.

They were absolutely fine. A little slow getting the keys but no big deal. Usual "victim" in the queue protesting loudly at the added insurance as they didn't take out their own, and another who didn't bring the CREDIT card they booked with. Car was nearly new and a nice drive, which I never throught I'd say about a Mokka!

I've said this in many posts on here. Go prepared, read the docs, take out your own insurance, you will be fine. I'm sure Avia will have terrible reviews too.

ALL the cheao hire co.s have terrible reviews because they make their money not from the car hire, but from the insurance add ons, and if you don't go prepared, prepare to pay! :-)

Take out car hire excess insurance before you go
Make 100% sure you take the CREDIT (not debit) card with you that you paid to hire the car.
Makes sure that card belongs to the nominated driver.
Politely decline all the hard sell of excess waivers, and break down recovery (your excess insurance covers, tyres, breakdown recovery etc). You'll be fine!
Let them put an 800 Euro "hold" on said credit card.
Enjoy the cheap hire. You are there for 10 mins - get it done and have a nice holiday.

I used Carwiz in Zagreb airport 2 years ago - really good experience. When I arrived they realised I'd booked a car class too small for my needs (skis) and upgraded me at no cost. Happily accommodated a 4am drop off for a ridiculous flight departure time too. I was more than happy.
