I wasn’t sure whether to post this here or the holidays section. People rent cars for business & pleasure so . . . .

This is a worrying development. Returning rental cars in the USA has always been stress free. They’ve never looked too closely at returning vehicles.

Every rental I've ever booked from the UK in the USA includes zero excess cover, so they are unconcerned about damage since they cannot ask you to pay for it. They didn't even care when I took a 4x4 back with a completely cracked windscreen.

It's different for US customers as they often buy without any insurance and rely instead on their own or that of their credit card company.

Would be a shame if it changed as it was always one of the nice things about hiring in the US.

Same here, have had a car broken into and smashed windscreens on separate vehicles and never had any issues at check in, both had to be swapped mid rental which are the only issues of getting an equivalent from a smaller rental centre.

Just returned a car to Hertz last Vegas with a cracked screen and it was obviously noted but no charge as they initially hire it out to you with full CDW or whatever it's called.

Just make sure you're not scimping on the insurance when booking although I think most UK based rentals have an element of CDW whereas US based rentals it's an optional extra.

I rented from hertz in Nashville last month and drove through these, I thought they were just regular cameras. Let me tell you a RAM2500 feels a bit big to try and get through one, how much would they charge for the entire camera system….

Is it really a bad thing? Some people treat hire cars like st, this might prevent them from being so careless. As a Brit renting it’s immaterial because of the insurances anyway right?

Unless of course over inflated repair claims push rental prices up for people here in the UK who book with CDW included

They have the same thing at Munich airport now, though the allowable damage was quite reasonable.

There's no sign yet of any changes to CDW inclusions for the EMEA market, so you have no concern if your licence fits and you use the proper websites.

This technology is not new, and it's being used by others too (and not just in the US).
