Flying out tomorrow. Staying at Hotel Belair which is central.

We want to visit Capri, Amalfi Coast, Pompeii but on the whole it's going to be a relaxing sort of holiday. How is best to get around? We have private transfer from Naples to the hotel and back but aside from that we are on our own.

Uber available?

Someone I spoke to mentioned travelling by boat along the coast as the roads can become jammed up?

Any must see things?

Thanks.

Take the direct train Sorrento to Pompeii, simple. Once there, hire a guide for the best experience. Herculaneum in Naples is better than Pompeii IMO.

If you are really into ancient ruins etc, take an organised day trip to Paestum, excellent place. Go by coach which will mean you'll get to travel the Amalfi Coast road, an experience in itself.

Take the ferry from Sorrento to Amalfi. Once there, take another ferry to Positano. Also take the bus from Amalfi to Ravello. Check the time of the return ferries Amalfi to Sorrento.

Also, take an organised day trip to Ischia. Can be organised by your hotel.

Watch out for cruise ships at Sorrento, sometimes 3 a day. The town gets rammed and the prices change too!

PS:

I would not consider the Hotel Belair to be central Sorrento!

Noisy, dirty & smelly but it looks like you are the better side of town.
Capri will be rammed, i would catch a ferry there as early as possible in the morning and then take the Funicular to the main town ASAP, as the ques will be mental.

PS enjoy the transfer, the drivers/bikes are bonkers over there. silly

I've not paid a huge amount of attention other than it was right on the front but looking now you're right, decent as a base though by the looks of it.

Thanks for all the tips, coach along Amalfi Coast is a good one, try and kill as many birds and all that as I quite fancy a few days just relaxing by the pool.

Make sure you visit Ravello. It’s a lovely village and you also get a spectacular view of the Amalfi coast from Villa Rufolo.

This. I drove to Paestum, and despite doing 50% over every speed limit, I was overtaken constantly biggrin

Check out when the cruise ships are in Naples and Sorrento and try and pick a low number day in terms of passenger numbers for the trip to Pompeii and Capri to minimize the volume of people.

https://www.cruisetimetables.com/naplesitalyschedu...

With Pompeii it does quieten down later on in the day and as others have said take the train as it is so much easier. I did hear something about numbers being restricted so don’t know if you have to book in advance now? Worth checking.

Likewise Capri is very busy so go early and be prepared for everything to be also expensive. Convertible taxis are fun!

If getting a bus down from town, walk back to where bus turns round to get on as can be rammed in town.

Recommend the boat trip down the coast.

Brilliant, thanks. We’ve just arrived and checked in, lovely rooms.

Only seen the darkness from the back of a Mercedes Vito so far, I felt he was driving fast but we were still the slowest biggrin

We stayed at the Belair in 2018, fantastic trip. Stayed in the "Don Mariano" suite.
Free afternoon tea each day was a nice touch for guests with plenty of beer and prosecco on ice.
Easy walk into town or down to the beach.
Enjoy!

Have been over to Positano, Amalfi and Ruvello today.

All very busy, Amalfi particularly. No ships in that I noticed. Wouldn’t bother with Amalfi again.

Ruvello has some lovely views and Villa Rufolo is very pretty.

Really liked Positano, really nice feel to it, some nice shops and a nice way to spend a couple of hours.

Get a coach day trip to Pompeii and up the volcano with lunch thrown in.

It’s better done with a guide. It’s like a furnace though so take plenty of fluids.

This place is well worth a visit for a swim. There is a bus from Sorrento.

We were there three weeks ago and I agree Amalfi and Posterino was over hyped. Capri on the other hand fantastic and well worth a good long day. The chair lift with little in the way of safety was a real treat.

Our daughter went diving from the Grand Harbour and we were recommended the local fish restaurant owned for years by a local fishing family, easily the best meal we had there and cheap at the side of everything else.

I loved Sorrento

Capri and Pompeii definitely on the list over the next week. May get the train to Pompeii for a change unless there’s a reason we shouldn’t?

Weather is glorious with just the right amount of temporary cloud cover to give us a break every so often. Scooter riders are mentalists and take no prisoners, most notably at crossings.

Food has been excellent. Kids get tired and cranky quickly, I think a long weekend without them would have meant we see and do more.

If it’s a relaxing holiday I’d stick to the boats for transport. The boats stop at the main locations along the coast. I went in May and got the occasional bus to Positano et al but the buses were rammed.

If you do get a bus, try and sit near the doors because when it stops and if you’re further back, people are often standing in the way and you can’t get off in time.

Lovely place to visit though, I enjoyed Sorrento. Ravello has stunning views and very laid back. You have to get a bus in Amalfi to Ravello but it’s worth it.

There are steps in Capri to the top if the funicular is too busy. I spent ages in a queue at the top, in hindsight I should have walked down.

All of that, I visited in winter and even then it was busy.

Yeah, there’s a lot of guff spoken about cruise ships and the ‘damage’ they cause etc. Sure, they do fleetingly add some pressure/volumes of people to locations at times but these places are always (and have always been) busy regardless.

Glad you enjoyed Ravello and it sounds like you’re having a great time. I adore Italy (I’m currently having my morning coffee overlooking Lake Garda).

I’d chuck Herculaneum in if you’ve got a spare day. Close by, smaller and quieter but like Pompeii in 3D. Fascinating that most of it still lies undiscovered under the town.

The Belair would have been just above us, we stayed in the Admiral a few weeks ago. wink
We did a multi stop though, 2 nights in Capri, 2 in Sorrento, then 3 in Naples, we are already planning going back to Naples. yes
