Besancon and other areas

Hello, we are off for about a week or so as soon as the schools go back ,quick road trip in France . We go quite regularly, however we have never been down to Besancon, that we quite fancy from YouTube videos we have seen.
Retired couple, no time constraints really. Typical day nice breakfast, drive maybe two hours ,look about something, snack lunch , couple of hours walk. Two more hours in car arriving destination hotel 5/6 pm. Nice meal look about a small or large town. Next day repeat. Hotel budget about Eur 200 generally max.

May we have some recommendations please for a nice route and any hotels recommendations. Totally flexible. Arriving and departing Calais.
We post on here at least twice a year asking for recommendations on a destination and always get great advice. Thanks.

Are there any views on places to go along the way there are back , good routes taking in specific cities/towns? From travellers in France please .
