Hello north of the border types!

What is the skiing like round/at Glenshees? How much do you actually get and when? Is it just deepest nastiest Jan & Feb every other yr?

Not asking for a hol, the missus has postulated about moving up around Perth area and it says Glenshees ain’t too far, so I thought I’d ask.

I might aswell ask whats the sentiment like for wanting to kill us all these days?

As a kid in the 60s I used to be up there just about every weekend from end of December sometimes through to May. At secondary school we had races there most weekends. Uni too in the 70s we could ski there most weekends - what stopped it was usually foul weather and not lack of snow.

Then, year on year the season got shorter. First it was maybe January to April, the. January to March, then February to March…then sod-all with just days here and there.

On a good day it’s pretty good skiing, but I’ve not skied there now for the past 2 years despite being able to drop everything any day (retired). There’s still decent opportunities for ski touring, but the bottom has really fallen out of the lift-served season. In fairness there is snow-making and a plastic slope in the beginner area so they try, but it’s a very small area. Of course every season is different and for all I know 2026 might be a bumper year. Who knows?

So in summary, if there’s snow it’s a decent enough place to ski, and surprisingly large (in area, not vertical). But the snow cover has been dreadful of late.

In the 80s we used to travel up to go Scottish skiing for typically 5 or 6 weekends during each winter season. On the rare occasions that it was sunny on both Saturday and Sunday the lift ques were very long. On other weekends it might be white-out conditions or even raining one of the days. On many of the trips, one of the days would be spend driving to an alternative resort which, we were told, had good snow or it wasn’t raining etc.

Then we discovered skiing in the alps… & Scotland skiing seemed really hard work and only suitable for hardy types.

These days I’d say the best thing about Scottish ski resorts is that both Glenshee and Lecht are on the old military road A93? which is probably the best driving road in the uk. The Glenshee lift is worth a ride up if you’re driving through there on a sunny day.
