911 hire from SIXT Barcelona or other road trip ideas?
Discussion
I usually do a European road trip once or twice a year in my own car but have recently sold my 911 and don’t plan on replacing it for a while as I want my next fun car to be at a level I can’t quite justify right now.
As I’ve always driven to Europe I don’t have much car hire experience other than when my 911 broke down and I finished my trip in a Kia Sportage… Having looked at various options of where to start my trip (I want to fly direct somewhere from Heathrow) it looked like a Z4 was going to be my likely choice from Geneva or Nice but now looking at exploring the Pyrenees from Barcelona and saw SIXT has a 911 to hire for c£250 per day (200km per day).
Anyone rented a 911 from SIXT? I’d hope they don’t substitute it for a different ‘4 seat luxury coupe’.
You can also rent a 911 from various European OPCs which I wasn’t aware of, but the prices are much more than SIXT but they do rent GT3s which might be fun for a day or two.
I’d prefer to rent a Boxster to be honest but haven’t found anywhere that does them.
Any ideas for being able to hire a fun car at a good airport location from a reputable firm would be very much appreciated. As would excellent hotels in the Pyrenees as I’m not familiar at all with that area.

Hi Deuce,
I hired a 911 for three days from Sixt in Dusseldorf last month. The car was a nearly new 992.2 T-hybrid GTS. You cannot take the top level of insurance cover on any Porsche that you hire from them. You aren’t covered for wheels, tyres, or glass. IIRC the excess is €2000.
Knowing that you aren’t covered if you get a stone chip on the windscreen did take away some of the enjoyment. At Dusseldorf you drive through a scanner when taking and returning the car. The chaps dealing with the returns were able to tell me immediately that there was no damage. They then went on to tell me that a couple of months ago they had somebody write off the same model of car within an hour of leaving the airport!
Also, my understanding is that you need to have a good history of renting with Sixt to be able to hire cars like a 911. There may be a minimum number of previous rentals to be eligible? (I travel for work regularly so wasn’t an issue for me).
In my case it was a hassle free experience but, my thoughts on the car aside, I would probably avoid hiring a 911 in future because of the limitations in cover. Lots of airport locations in Germany have M3/M4, they might have them at Barcelona as well?
Hope you’re able to get something sorted.
