4-5 day trip for 80yr old Mum - probably Europe

Hi

It's my mum's 80th Birthday next April. Every milestone birthday the family has taken a trip to celebrate. 50 was Rome, 60 was Sydney (my brother lived there at the time), 70 was NYC now we're trying to find somewhere for her 80th. Probably Europe, but not necessarily.

She and my 83yr old dad are well and moderately fit, her Parkinson's aside - they can walk fine, but probably not for an hour+.

She wants somewhere warm but not hot, but April is awkward. Probably city break territory with the added complexity that whilst me (and my wife) and my parents are both UK based, my brother and his family live in Chicago, so accessibility needs to be reasonable for them.

It's either be just the 6 adults, or the kids as well (which would be 3 girls, 2x 17yr olds 1x 19yr old). We also all did the Amalfi Coast and Rome last summer.


Blind suggestions have been Nice, Milan, Seville, Madrid, Barcelona, Lisbon - all of which would likely be late-teens/early 20s day time temperatures.

But any other suggestions from experience? Plenty to see/do, nice area, not too hot, but reasonable assurance of being warm.

Somewhere in northern Italy may fit the bill.

As an aside, congratulations for keeping them mobile. My parents, younger than yours, fit, healthy and no genuine issues are reluctant to travel about 75 miles to have a few days away.

Went to Seville a few years ago, its all on the level which suited me as due to back problems I find hill a bit of a struggle. I may be wrong but I think Lisbon has quite a lot of steep streets

Southern Croatia? Stay at Cavtat which is a lovely harbour village with an old town, and excellent restaurtants/bars along the water front. You can then spend a couple of days visiting Dubrovnik which you can get to easily via water taxi / bus / taxi.

Porto - a wonderful City with great food, people and architecture, oh and not to mention the Port!

..and you could do a mini cruise up the Douro

Fly into Bilbao, night or two there seeing the sights, then go to San Sebastián for pintxos

Id echo that and was about to post the same thing until he said April and the required temperatures.

If your Mum has any interest in food, then 100% this. There's nowhere better.

Both Lisbon and Porto are very hilly. Both fabulous places, but both very hilly.

Seville, Barcelona and Granada are all fantastic and will be warmer than San Sebastian - but not as much fun.

If they have not been then the only place is Cairo. 5-8 days is to short to go to Luxor as well but also essential at some time.

Thanks everyone. Good suggestions there.

We definitely just want a single location, city orientated and ease of access for US to fly in too.

I've done Nice several times, I do think that's a good option, plenty to do as well.
Tempted by Lisbon but hills might dissuade, and overall Portuguese weather looks a but iffy.
Seville also looks a decent option.

Athens is an interesting option, never been but have friends there. Bit further but benefits might outweigh.

Have also done Egypt loads, would bias towards Luxor (a dozen plus visits over the last 25yrs) rather than Cairo (which I thought was a bit of a toilet in comparison), but not sure my folks are ready for the beauties of Luxor!
